Mission Statement

Pentok is a Tibetan word meaning “to benefit and positively impact others.” The Pentok Institute is a grass roots initiative led by local women committed to promoting sustainable education and leadership for women and girls in low-income nomadic areas of Qinghai, western China.

Director Bio

Shamo Thar Shamo Thar holds an MA in international development from Brandeis University, USA. Over the past decade, she has worked extensively with Tibetan rural communities in Qinghai, western China and international development agencies in the USA and China. She has held a lectureship at Qinghai Normal University where she taught English, and initiated and instructed the Development Studies Program. Humbled by a trip to Mukbo Village, an isolated herding community of 750 Tibetan nomads, founded Pentok Institute, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to empowering Tibetan young girls through sustainable and quality education.

The food cost in Xining City is: 20RMB/day/person=4US$/day/person. If the volunteer decides to stay at the Pentok office, there would be less food expenses.

Pentok can provide free accommodation for our volunteers as they can stay at our office.

The train ticket from Beijing to Xining is 430RMB/bed, it is about a 24 hours trip; from Shanghai to Xining is 467RMB/bed, it is a 31 hour trip to Xining. After you get to Xining, the public transportation and taxis are very convenient.

Accommodation Info

Most of the volunteers will be offered a humble-furnished bedroom in Xining city where Pentok office is located.

Xinghai Drokpa Resource Center:
Xinghai Drokpa Cultural Center will serve the needs of 5,000 students, 400 teachers and 1,000 women in Xinghai County. 90% of the students are from Tibetan nomadic families located far away from the schools in the county town. Most of the students board at schools, and some of them go
