Mission Statement

SDCN cares for 15 Nepali children in central Kathmandu, operating as a stable, long term children's home and providing continuing education for children cannot be supported by family do to political unrest and economic troubles in Nepal. The children are living in a safe and secure environment, receiving nutritious meals, an education and medical care. The mission of SDCN is to raise our children to be healthy Nepali citizens. The SDC is a registered NGO (non-government organization) and non-profit organization. All work undertaken is on a voluntary basis, with the exception of our two Nepali caretakers.

Director Bio

Sue Clark-Pitrolo Suzanne Clark-Pitrolo is the International Director for Social Development Center Nepal. She currently splits her time between North America and Australia, with multiples visits per year to visit the children in Kathmandu Nepal. She handles all the fundraising, administration and volunteer coordination for SDCN with the help of local Nepali directors and international coordinators.

There is no direct cost for volunteers. SDCN can help to arrange inexpensive homestays for long term volunteers and there are a number of local guesthouses available for under $10 a day, all within walking distance of the center. Food costs in Nepal are minimal, less than $10 a day as well, volunteers are welcome to eat dinner at the center with the children.

Accommodation Info

Home stay in Kathmandu Accommodation 2 meals per day eaten with the children at the orphanage Accomodations at the home of SDCN Chairman Mr Uttam Bhatta, a short walk to SDCN and 10 minute walk to Thamel. You will have a bedroom separate from the family (may be shared with other volunteers.) Meals will be with the children at SDCN. The Nepali tradition is 2 meals a day, consisting of rice, lentil soup and curry. These meals are eaten before school and at approximately 6pm.

Travel Logistics

One or two volunteers at a time is ideal, three also works well. We are open to shorter visits by volunteers but those able to spend two to three weeks with have the strongest connection and best experience. The center is located in the center of Kathmandu, the main city of Nepal and is walkable from most transportation and lodging centers in the city.

Ongoing Education:

Volunteering in Nepal is an experience of a lifetime and often life changing. The children of SDC attend Little Blossoms School, which is a short walk from their home. Volunteer help is regularly needed and deeply appreciated. This usually takes the form of arriving in the morning to prepare the kids for school and walking them to class. Volunteers return in the afternoon to spend time on homework, art, music and play with the kids before a family dinner and bedtime.rnrnVolunteers play a crucial role within Social Development Center Nepal. They bring with them knowledge from other countries, foreign languages, skills, energy, companionship, new ideas and methods of helping the children and ultimately, love. The children will welcome you with open arms as they thrive with their new friends.rnVolunteers help the children and live in guardians with daily routines including meal preparations, homework, English language, preparing for school, personal hygiene, computer skills, playing and the gift of being exposed to friends from all over the world. Besides providing a good, stable environment for the children to develop, SDCN is committed to providing the best opportunity for education. All of the children attend an English speaking private school. In Nepal, the best chance of being employed in the private or public sectors due to the level of tourism is improved with the ability to speak English. Our hope is also to provide the children with the best chance of attending a tertiary education program. The volunteers play a big role in this initiative by interacting with the children only in English. rnSpending time in Kathmandu, being with the children and getting to know the city and people is something you will never forget. You will form an instant attachment with all of the children and you will leave Nepal with a new sense of understanding and achievement.
