Feria de Lectura – A Day of Reading

October 24, 2012

Proyecto Horizonte, Bolivia

On 19th of October we celebrated the day of reading in Plaza Colon in the city center of Cochabamba. Most of the children of Proyecto Horizonte day care center and some children from the school took part in the event. Also the parents of the children joined our event encouraging children to read. In Uspha-Uspha community the adult illiteracy rate is still quite high and Proyecto Horizonte is working on improving it. The day of reading is a good way to emphasize the importance of reading for both adults and children. The children of the kindergarten had prepared small stories for the event, which they read for people passing by The Plaza Colon. Once somebody listened to a story they signed their booklets and at the end of the day the children...

Abriendo Mentes, Costa Rica

By Christie VogtOn October 9th and 11th, a group of our 3rd through 6th graders visited the conservation area Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Mixto Conchal for their third of four planned excursions. The trips have been organized to give students the opportunity to observe and document changes in the ecosystem throughout the year. For this trip, the kids were asked to compare the state of the forest in the dry season to the wet season.Abriendo Mentes at ConchalOur guide, Rocio Rojas, and her assistants started off the October 11th visit by asking the students to sit in a circle on the ground so that she could briefly talk about the expectations and rules to be followed for the afternoon (quiet voices, stay in a line, hands off wildlife, leave...

A World of Possibilities

October 24, 2012

Abriendo Mentes, Costa Rica

By Rachel GallucciThe theme of kids classes last week at AM was Transportation and Travel. Through various projects, crafts, and activities, the kids were learning valuable vocabulary words and, more importantly, how to think beyond the scope of Potrero. As a recent high school graduate, I truly believe that a global perspective is one of the most important, invaluable skills a child can be taught. The bottom line is, when you are given the opportunity to see just how far you can travel in this world—how many people you can meet, how many things you can do, how much impact you can have—you dream bigger. Your dreams can only grow as big as your perspective, and if that perspective is limited to a small town, it’s hard to develop big ambitions....

Changes for New Hope Expands

October 18, 2012

Changes for New Hope, Peru

Nothing is static in a project like this.  People, situations and opportunities appear without  announcement and we welcome every challenge.    This week was just like that. Welcome news seems to be deaf to every negativity. It just arrives like a ray of sunshine. Our project has expanded with the addition of two more eager groups of children. Their parents had heard about our progress in our present groups. They have asked us to begin reaching out to their children numbering about 40 in all. We start immediately. Finger puppets to teach effective communication skills, magic to entertain the children and learning games to enhance their learning abilities will balance out our recreation and art projects.    As though that was not enough to give us all permanent smiles, a local church group gave us the...
