Preconceived Notions and Misconceptions about Sustainable Development in Africa

September 14, 2012

Common Ground for Africa, Kenya

By Volunteer Katie wood.Since I’ve been here, I’ve realized a few things I’ve had misconceptions about. Before my trip, I had a mental picture of what Africa would be like. I didn’t even realize I had these preconceived notions until I got here and started to see how things really are. I’m certain when I visit my next two destinations this list will grow.I had this idea that because Africa was underdeveloped, the process of developing it in a sustainable way would be an easier challenge than converting a developed system into a sustainable one. Africa’s a blank slate, right? All it needs is some innovative ideas and empowerment of its people. First, I’ve realized (and am a little ashamed to admit my naivety) that changing from one...

Hot water at last for intag volunteers

September 14, 2012

Intag, Ecuador

On the 18th and 21st of August 2012, the intagtour project was able to instal a gas-heated hot shower for our volunteers and ecotourist visitors.  The lack of  hot water for the shower has been a problem for the intagtour project right from its beginnings in 2008, as the Intag area is at the chilly altitude of between  1500 and 2800 metres above sea level, making taking a shower quite a challenge in itself for volunteers accustomed to western standards! The work was carried out by local builder Roberto Ruales (who also hosts volunteers with his wife Consuelo and their large family), assisted by Omar Agea, an 18 year old volunteer from Quito. The work was funded in its entirety by the Omprakash Foundation ($408.14 cents,  of a total development grant of...

Update on Scotty, our African Hawk Eagle

September 12, 2012

Daktari Bush School and Wildlife Orphanage, South Africa

Today Scotty, our African Hawk Eagle, got her bandage removed. She is still getting used to using her left wing again but appears to be quite happy with her new freedom. The two volunteers taking care of her are sitting in her enclosure when they feed her to get her used to them. Normally she should then be comfortable with these 2 people going in there and disinfecting her wound etc. Let's hope it works and that she will start using her left wing shortly ;)

An unforgettable Kruger-trip!!

September 11, 2012

Daktari Bush School and Wildlife Orphanage, South Africa

Every week one child is chosen that has improved the most and is very interested in Wildlife and environmental issues. They get a Marula tree to plant at home or at school and a free 1-day safari. So Sunday we went to pick up 8 children from the past weeks and drove off to the Kruger National Park!! It was absolutly perfect! The kids loved it and learned so much about South-African Wildlife. The look on their faces everytime they see an animal is exactly why we put all this effort and love into DAKTARI!!

The Life of a Woman in Kenya - Why it’s important for girls to get an education

September 10, 2012

Common Ground for Africa, Kenya

Opportunities in Kenya are lacking for men and women alike, but because women have the responsibility of raising children, it limits their opportunities in many ways. You could say the same thing in America on a basic level. I’m going to talk about the challenges women face in getting employment, and securing it, especially after she has a kid.If an uneducated girl is unlucky, she will have gotten pregnant at a young age and have the burden of raising her kid, possibly with the help of her struggling family. They will live 8-12 people per small mud hut (I mean really small) with no running water or electricity. Her day will be spent walking hours to get water, which will likely be contaminated with typhoid and she won’t have the...

Life as it is with street children

September 09, 2012

Elgon Youth Development Centre, Uganda

Music makes lives of vulnerable children meaningful hence reform for a sound future. When Henery was 10, his father passed away, leaving his family in poverty. Shortly after, Henery ran away from home, hoping to find a better life on the streets. Instead, he fell into a life of drug abuse and violence, begging to survive at bus stops in Uganda. Life was not easy has I thought it would be he says.  He always walked around in town looking for scrap metals which he would sale to scrap dealers and got a few coins to buy food for himself! He adds; when one needed a spot to sleep on verandas of shops and ‘’protection’’ while on the street, you had to obey what the big boys asked of you to do....
