Preparing my trip to the Omprakash Cross-Cultural Workshop (Chapter II)

June 14, 2012 | 1 comment

Voluntario Global, Argentina

Check the Chapter I And so, here is my firsts question for the trip...Why is it so important to attend events such as this?Answer: Because the exchange of knowledge and insight is a fundamental tool for social organisations who, through the understanding and experience of others, can find creative solutions for social problems. Why is the exchange of experience and knowledge one of the most essential tools for strengthening the work of social organisations?Answer: Because it provides a chance for dialogue, thought, listening, and debate, which are all invaluable forms of understanding that cannot be found in books. Not only this, through this exchange we are reminded that we are not alone in our initiative, a realisation that reaffirms our goals. Why is it necessary to create support networks that cross country...

Happy Anniversary Abriendo Mentes!

June 13, 2012 | 1 comment

Abriendo Mentes, Costa Rica

This past Friday marked the 3rd anniversary of Abriendo Mentes, and in true Tico style, we celebrated this amazing milestone with a massive fiesta! As I walked into the Salon Comunal, colorful balloons and bright “Happy Anniversary” signs covered the walls. In one corner, busy Tica mamas prepared plates of arroz con pollo while in the opposite corner, Drew and the other “guys” ensured the sound system was up and running. (By the way, there are currently 4 male volunteers, in addition to Drew, so we have to make a special mention, as this is a milestone in and of itself!) Near the linen-covered tables, some volunteers painted bindis on our students-turned-professional-Bollywood dancers to prepare for their big dance debut. Meanwhile, in the center of the room, other volunteers practiced songs...

Community Kite Project

June 13, 2012

Abriendo Mentes, Costa Rica

Community Kite Project is a group of artists who perform kite making workshops in communities around the world. Their purpose is to bring communities together by the simple act of creating and flying kites. They joined us the weekend of May 18th to do a workshop with the youth and families of Potrero. On Friday afternoon the children gathered in the salon to make these beautiful yet simple kites. A single kite hung in the doorway as the children entered the room, and the excitement that spread across their faces was contagious. They began the project with prepared templates of a rhomboidal shape, for their soon to be masterpieces. They then selected the base color for their kites made of tissue paper, and from there started...

Rico Tico Culture

June 13, 2012 | 1 comment

Abriendo Mentes, Costa Rica

Abriendo Mentes is situated in the most ideal location: surrounded by beautiful beaches, warm weather, delicious food, and nice, accepting people. Costa Rica was recently named one of the top places to live to escape world conflict by sky-today.com, and I couldn’t agree more! Tico (Costa Rican) culture, as represented by Potrero, is very peaceful and full of rich traditions with a laid back lifestyle. We asked AM volunteers to write down some of the most interesting cultural differences they noticed between Potrero Tico culture and the culture where they grew up (mostly American). These aren’t necessarily good or bad differences, just different! Here’s the top 10 of what they came up with:-One of the best things I know here is the way the kids look out for...

Today the school has 500 students from 14 different tribal communities. The award has helped the school but the road ahead has not been easy. The school is heavily dependent on help from friends and well-wishers."It is very difficult sitting in one part of the country convincing others in other parts of the country. Helambu Project, Nepal

Few weeks into the project, Nima Sherpa, our Project Coordinator, shares her thoughts and impressions on the Student Collaboration Project so far.Helambu Project is partnering with PaxWorks and other organizations in order to empower educators, women and children through a Student Collaboration Project (SCP). The SCP focuses on developing girl’s aged 11-16 leadership and planning skills. The Student Collaboration Project helps encourage and provide opportunities to girls to develop their leadership skills and implement projects with their peers. Preparing my trip to the Omprakash Cross-Cultural Workshop (Chapter I)

June 08, 2012 | 2 comments

Voluntario Global, Argentina

As partner of The Omprakash Foundation, I applied on March for the Stipend Award for Cross-Cultural Workshop in Costa Rica. Omprakash announce me some time ago, they gave me the stipend to assist to the workshop. As I get myself prepared to attend the Omprakash Cross-Cultural Workshop in Costa Rica - organized by Opening Minds - many questions have occurred to me. I’ve started to think about meeting new people and new places, and what this event really means. For me, imagining and planning a journey is one and the same thing, especially when the journey, in itself, carries meaning in it’s aim of exchanging experience and uniting those who work for the social development of local communities. It is said that one of the questions that can open up...
