Looking Forward - A Bright Future for the Helping Hands Pharmacy

January 28, 2012

Prescriptions for Peace, Peru

In the summer of 2010, we had the privilege of introducing a non-profit pharmacy to the San Sebastian region of Cusco, Peru.  With funding from the Kathryn W. Davis foundation and a partnership with Helping Hands, we were able to supply a small community with affordable medication and other medical services.  We called our initiative "Prescriptions for Peace”.   Back then, we only wished to lessen the incredible burden carried by so many around us.  We hoped to sustain our venture long enough to make a positive impact on our community. After almost two years, Prescriptions for Peace is still going strong.  We accomplished some great things this year and the the future looks even brighter. This summer, we will both be in Cusco to host a record number of volunteers. ...

Individual life story before E.S. Tibet

January 27, 2012

Educational Support Tibet, India

After catnapping on the overnight bus from Delhi, I woke as the sun was beginning to rise to a magnificent view of a fast flowing river, mountains and green, green valleys. It was my first visit to the Indian State of Hamachal Pradesh. As the bus coasted along, I wondered what my time as a volunteer at E.S. Tibet in Dharamshala would bring. An hour or so later, I was at the gates of the school and warmly welcomed by the School Manager, Choephel. Tibetan flags fluttering in the breeze had an immediate impact and I knew I was going to enjoy this unique experience. After an orientation tour of the school, I met the other volunteers Arnrid and Karmo who were here like I was, to teach English to 23...

The Most Special Place I Have Ever Been To In My Life

January 27, 2012

Educational Support Tibet, India

Being a former student ( who graduated two months ago ) of E.S-Tibet, I'm very privileged to get this wonderful opportunity to be a volunteer in this school, where I have been educated morally as well as literally; brought up with great care and love; and where my mind has got enlighten and my heart has felt something. Thanks for E.S-Tibet and the members of this homely school, I have learnt a lot of valuable things ( like tolerance, how to deal with different personalities, how to satisfy with the things I have, the importance of self-responsibility, how not to take everything as granted, etc ) both when I was a student and especially when I am a teacher for those lovely students.I have been to the schools since I...

Thanks E.S. Tibet

January 27, 2012

Educational Support Tibet, India

I have really enjoyed teaching here. The students are very friendly, warm and great fun! They have a real enthusiasm to learn English and they are very conscientious. They are such a pleasure to teach. The resources are varied which are a great help in lesson planning and I have received positive support from our Manager and the other volunteer teachers. I am very pleased with my single room which overlooks the mountains. The view is beautiful. It is so peaceful here. You really feel that you are immersed with nature as there is a lovely river flowing nearby. The walks and hikes are incredibly breathtaking. The local people are also very friendly. We are near some very interesting places to visit such as the Dalai Lama’s residence in Mcleod...

I felt like part of the family

January 27, 2012

Educational Support Tibet, India

With less than 2 weeks left at E.S.T I've been asked to write a paragraph summarizing my experience. Words like "awesome" and "amazing" are among the many adjectives that seem too inadequate for this task. I've been calling E.S.T home for the past two months and not once since I stepped off the bus in Dharamsala have I doubted my decision to come here. Even faced with the major possibility of culture shock that a country like India might present to some foreigners, it didn't take very long to feel completely at ease amongst the students who also consider E.S.T home. And while there were adjustments to be made, i.e. washing in a spring, doing laundry by hand (I'm embarrassed to admit that I had to ask for help with...

Haiti Finale

January 25, 2012

European Disaster Volunteers, Philippines

It’s been about two months since our international volunteers finished their time in Haiti, and we’d like to extend a warm thank you to everyone who donated to make the 20 projects our volunteers completed possible. You can check out our thank you video at the end of this post. Our volunteers may be gone, but I’m delighted to report that our English and Scholarship Programmes are thriving. In fact, more than 20 English students recently passed their exams, and will advance to the next level! There are photos coming soon, so stay tuned. The students in our English and Scholarship programmes benifited hugely from our “Give the Gift of Education” this holiday season. Donors from around the world gave more than $30,000 to support Haitian students,...

Haiti Communitere, Haiti

Haiti Communitere visited Cite Soleil to participate in the inauguration of the Jaden TapTap Garden. Our resources were put to use helping this mobilized group welcome over a dozen local and international groups. We provided the tables and shade to display the artisans and other active groups of PaP. In addition, we put the Ubuntu Block machine to use forming blocks and displaying this amazing building concept of transforming Styrofoam waste into secure and insulated facilities. Please see our Ubuntu project link for more information on this project. The Jaden Tap Tap (Tap Tap Garden) is a community urban garden and tree nursery in Cite Soleil, Haiti. Set on a portion of land in Cite Soleil that was once a garbage dump, the garden now has more than...

Indoor Game Drive

January 24, 2012

Daktari Bush School and Wildlife Orphanage, South Africa

Last Tuesday and Wednesday we received a TON of rain - so much that  our dam burst and our roads flooded.  The kids usually go to Makalali on Wednesday mornings, but last week it would have meant crossing a few rivers here and a few in Makalali, so we had to cancel. We didn't want our kids to miss out on their chance to meet all the employees in Makalali or go on their game drive. So, we improvised. We had our volunteers take over the different jobs, and the kids went around and interviewed them. Then our ranger (Destry) and our tracker (Thabo) led the children on an indoor game drive. Our volunteers held up pictures of animals and the children stopped the car to take pictures and ask...

Testimonial of Megan, one of our former volunteers

January 23, 2012

Seeds of Hope, Peru

Volunteering at Seeds brought much sunshine & happiness to my Peruvian experience. As a solo traveler, it felt amazing to be welcomed so quickly into the Seeds family. The children are curious, respectful, and radiate positive energy; they bring so many smiles, starting when they walk in, kiss your cheek, and say “Good morning, Professor!” Helping them with their homework brings a sense of accomplishment when they finally see how to do the equation on their own or when they can explain to their neighbor how to get the right answer. And when it’s time to play or go to the park on Fridays, they reminded me how much fun can be had with so little, like how an old jump rope makes a perfect volleyball...
