The Buenos Aires Project

August 05, 2011

Voluntario Global, Argentina

My name is Bree and my friend Izzie and I came to Buenos Aires from Sydney, Australia two and a half months ago. We have been volunteering with Voluntario Global in orphanages known as ‘Querubines’ (meaning ‘Angels’) outside of the city located in Beccar and Olivos. Their purpose is to give children from complicated backgrounds a second chance at a family lifestyle in a caring and stable environment.I (Izzie) was placed in an orphanage situated in a suburb called Olivos. Like Bree’s is as well, Olivos is a middle class suburb on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. The house was donated with the intent of providing a comfortable, safe neighbourhood for the kids to grow up in. I remember my first, not-so-shiny-impressions of the 1.5 hour commute to Olivos,...

One Year in Haiti!

August 01, 2011

European Disaster Volunteers, United Kingdom

In June, EDV passed our one year mark in Haiti, and what a year it has been. From June 2010 to June 2011, 153 EDV volunteers directly affected the lives of 2,104 Haitian earthquake survivors. Those 2,104 include children now attending school in a classroom EDV built, orphaned children living in new, safe housing, adults attending (and teaching!) our English classes, and vulnerable children receiving health education so that they can grow into healthy adults leading their communities toward a better tomorrow. You can check out all we’ve accomplished in Haiti in our One Year Report. We’re incredibly grateful to the more than 1,000 individuals who have given over the last year to keep our projects running as well as to the...

My Experience with Abriendo Mentes, by Shelia O'Brien

July 29, 2011

Abriendo Mentes, Costa Rica

My experience at Abriendo Mentes was nothing short from amazing. The level of energy that the staff, interns, and volunteers exuberate is inspiring and it definitely motivated myself to come back and volunteer next year. The program opens your eyes to the real issues of Potrero, a community where education is not the priority but where family values and hard work governs the town. Abriendo Mentes is making an exceptional effort at trying to help the town's lack of educational systems, especially when it comes to teaching the English language. Although my time volunteering was only a few weeks, I was able to notice significant differences in the childrens' performance. Not only are the children sweet and adorable but they are smart and show great potential...

I Only Wish it Shall be Great

July 22, 2011

Project Why, India

I stumbled upon this picture while sorting the thousands of photos on my computer. I do not know how I had missed this snapshot! It was taken a few weeks ago when school results were announced. The three little topped their respective classes and had brought their report cards to show it to their teachers. The picture was shot just outside our Govindpuri primary centre. The little girls were very proud of the attention they were getting. I think that till then no one had lauded their effort. That is too often the plight of children born on the wrong side of the fence. The stars that adorned their report cards are never praised by their parents who often are too busy to take a moment to give their children the...

Our Volunteers tell about La Copa America

July 22, 2011

Voluntario Global, Argentina

Copa America is well and truly underway. After a stuttering start the tournament is beginning to sparkle, demonstrated by last nights games Brazil dismantling Ecuador 4-2 after Paraguay had been held to a 3-3 draw with Venezuela. The ‘big’ footballing nations, notably Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, all look set to progress to the quarter finals but there have been plenty of positives for the rest, with nations such as Bolivia and Venezuela proving the strength in depth of Latin American football. Copa America offers a platform for each nation to showcase their own unique style of football, nurtured over the past century, in a proud continent with such a rich footballing history. It was Argentina who hosted the first organised Latin American tournament in 1916, with only themselves, Brazil, Uruguay and...

Qokiso orphans at Daktari

July 18, 2011

Daktari Bush School and Wildlife Orphanage, South Africa

Normally Daktari works with 5 local schools, but during school holidays Daktari sometimes gives the opportunity to the even less privileged children to stay with us. In week 26 Daktari welcomed 10 children of Qokiso Orphanage to have a week of learning about nature, wildlife, social skills and a lot of FUN. This is the feedback from Sarah and Bjørg, who are in charge of the Qokiso Orphans Project:Thank you so much for giving our kids such a good time. The week spend at Daktari is such a wonderful and unforgettable experience for our orphans, and it makes such a good impact on their lives.  I asked some of them what they liked best, and Humphrey said without having to reflect: The food!!! I had a good laugh; he just...

Clean up in Metz village with Daktari kids & volunteers!

July 16, 2011

Daktari Bush School and Wildlife Orphanage, South Africa

Thursday Daktari organised a clean up in Metz village. At 11.00 in the morning the Daktari volunteers met 20 enthusiastic kids at the taxi rank in Metz village. We started off with singing to get the spirit going and talking about littering and how long plastic takes to break down (10.000 years!!). Mokgadi, from Maruleng municipality, came and brought us 40 garbage bags and gloves to help, thank you for that! After the intro we started and cleaned the whole taxi rank and 3 kilometres of street towards Ramatau School! It looked fabulous. By the end we had 65 garbage bags full!!! To celebrate we took the kids for a soft drink at the dam, with a beautiful view of the mountains. We are very proud of the volunteers Christy,...

Radio Launch at Los Pibes Community Center

July 15, 2011

Voluntario Global, Argentina

One of the projects volunteers at Voluntario Global take part in is ‘Comedor Los Pibes’. A community centre which serves as a soup kitchen, feeding over 100 people in need every day and providing not just a warm meal but also serves as a social meeting point for those who needed it. However, last week the community centre hosted a completely different activity with the launch party of the community radio station FM Riachuelo taking place there on Friday. I went along to with a few other volunteers to party who were there to celebrate the launch of the radio station.Located in the barrio of La Boca, FM Riachelo is a radio station which aims to provide a voice to everyone; their motto being “Donde caben todas las voces” (Where...
