Rinchen's Story

April 29, 2011

Lithang Social English Training Program, China

“In my heart, I feel the strong desire to help people become educated,” says Rinchen Chuta, founder of Lithang Social English Training Program (LSETP). Rinchen founded LSETP in April 2009. Now fluent in Tibetan, English, and Chinese, he himself has faced some of the highest barriers in order to acquire his language knowledge. He was born in the Dechonma nomadic area in Litang in 1981 and grew up as a traditional nomad living under a black yak tent, keeping yaks and horses, and moving four times a year according to the seasons. At the age of 21 he knew nothing but oral Tibetan and the language of nature. One day, he fell ill and was taken to a hospital in the closest city, Kangding, which was 16 hours from his home....

Goodbye!

April 28, 2011

Daktari Bush School and Wildlife Orphanage, South Africa

Last Saturday was a sad day for the Daktari team as we had to say goodbye to Rodolphe, our great office volunteer.  He worked at Daktari for 3 months, and worked very hard, with passion, determination and without counting his time. He wrote proposals for our new project and kept you all updated online via Facebook. We are missing this hard working and competent office volunteer but also a really good friend.  We want to wish him good luck with his next project in Cape Town and we know he can reach whatever goal he wants for his future. Monday was another emotional day for us at Daktari. We found a new farm for Charlotte, one of our three little warthogs. In her new home there was this orphaned male warthog who...

Reproductive Health, Sexual Rights & South Sudan

April 22, 2011

HOPE Ofiriha, Norway

Reproductive health problems remain the leading causes of death for women of childbearing age worldwide. The impact is far worse in developing countries, which also have high fertility rates. Besides terrible reproductive health outcomes, these counters score poorly in poverty and education outcomes. South Sudan is no exception to this picture. The long civil war between the North and the South made reproductive health a crisis for South Sudan’s women, many of whom are widows and girls who had their sexual and reproductive rights abused during the hostilities. As many as one in nine women refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in South Sudan die in pregnancy or childbirth, and a girl born in the region is more likely to die in pregnancy or childbirth than finish primary school. South Sudanese...

The Elusive Gift of Play By Rachel Forseth

April 17, 2011

Helping Honduras Kids, Honduras

The Elusive Gift of Play By Rachel ForsethMy journey in Honduras was filled with extremes -- beauty like nothing I could have imagined, but brokenness and hurt that I could not quite comprehend. Heart warming stories and heart wrenching tragedies. Laughter and joy that was contagious, but tears and burdens carried by all. On our third day there, I found myself at a loss for words while staring into the face of a starving, crying orphan living in a poor rural area near La Ceiba, Honduras. Saying “Jesus loves you” felt oddly hypocritical, or maybe just an understatement. It took everything out of these small children to squeeze a smile upon receiving relief supplies that might last them a month....
