A Teacher's Reflections on AM

January 22, 2013

Abriendo Mentes, Costa Rica

This story was written by Carrie Scott, who led the Brasilito Youth Education program for nine months in 2012.  She recently transitioned back to Oregon.Every few days, for the past four weeks, I’ve started up my computer, opened a word document, and began typing my blog post for Abriendo Mentes. Inevitably, my finger would end up mashing the“backspace” button until nothing remained. Reasons behind this scenario are numerous.- One: how do you describe a nine month period of your life and a community like Brasilito in a blog-sized post? Do I choose to write about one special moment or person – and thereby ignore the fact that most (read: all) of the people I met were special?- Two: how do I do justice to the fact that Abriendo Mentes has...

Building Dignity., Peru

Dear friends of Building Dignity,Greetings from Lomo de Corvina (Lima, Peru), where Building Dignity is working hard to address one of the area’s most pressing challenges: the lack of resources and support for students. In January, Building Dignity welcomed Ana María Mejía Huisa to the team as our Program Coordinator. Follow your dream!

January 17, 2013

Atelier Favela, Nicaragua

Sabine Harmes - 31/05/1983 - born in the Netherlands. It all started during my first trip to Brazil. Here I was really confronted for the first time with the social inequalities that this world holds. It made such an impression on me that I decided to take a internship in Rio de Janeiro, and I ended up working in the slums of the capital: the favelas. I saw from right up close how it was to grow up in an environment where all the privileges and opportunities that I had when I was younger were practically non-existent.The slums are such an extreme place; you land in a different, isolated world where a war between drug cartels, the police and rivaling gangs is always in the air. At any moment the favela,...

Volunteer’s Work for Nutrition in Lukwambe village.

January 14, 2013

Ngerengere River Eco Camp, Tanzania

Volunteer’s Work for Nutrition in Lukwambe village.During our tours and meetings in Lukwambe village, volunteers: Metin, Damaris and later Maya. We found many children to have signs of nutritional deficiency.Major signs were underweight and low growth in relation to ages. We decided to conduct a short intensive research on foods types, values and availability in the area. We realized that the area has bulk of food species but people are lacking knowledge on how to utilize food resources. We came up with an idea of establishing a demonstration organic garden plot for wild vegetables locally known as “SURUDA” which is very nutritious and palatable. We collected Suruda roots from bush and raised them on a garden. I think this might the first Suruda garden in Tanzania! We invited people from village to...

Please Don´t Give Us Anything

Changes for New Hope, Peru

¨What? Are you kidding us?¨,  you´re probably thinking.  With all the expenses incurred by running a project like Changes for New Hope, why would we tell everyone not to give us anything anymore?   It is because when you give away something, you no longer have it and you have nothing to show for it in return. You feel a sense of loss, possibly a hidden resentment and maybe secretly wish that you would have kept your money right there in your pocket. There is a crossfire between your head and your heart, and regardless of which one wins, you have less today than you did just last night.   We would like to step into the line of fire and make a suggestion which has worked very well for many who...
