A Really Great Organizationprint storyJune 28, 2012 Children of Shambala China
I've been volunteering for Children of Shambala since November 2011. We have a great project that identifies children in western China that are at severe risk of not being able to go to school or worse. Often, these children have lost one or both of their parents and are kept at home to do the housework. This is especially true of girls caught in this situation. I've mostly been working with them to try to raise more money to support the children. As most of the staff in local partner organizations are my former students, I feel a great connection to them and their work, and continue to provide them help with their English when they write reports, speak to potential donors, etc.
There are a lot of opportunities for foreigners to help out with this organization. It's also poised to grow soon, going from 450 children in the program to more than 600 within the next year. The local staff need help with grant and report writing, interaction with potential donors, capacity building, etc.
