Current & Past Volunteer Stories

Want to know what it might be like to volunteer abroad?

Omprakash volunteers have been posting stories, photos and even videos from their time abroad since 2007. We now have an extensive collection of personal stories from volunteers who've worked with our partners abroad. You can browse through the most recent stories below or use the category selection tool to narrow your search. Alternatively click on the Stories tab for each organization we work with to see specific accounts from a particular organization. Be careful - you might lose a couple hours of your day in here! Happy reading.

Mawuvio's Outreach Programme Ghana
Kaitlyn Gitter

The music program has been a huge success so far!  The children have been trying so hard and love coming to our practices.  We have been teaching harmonica, flute, trumpet, keyboard, xylophone, recorder, and guitar.  The dance program has also continued to be a huge hit.  So far we have taught The Cupid Shuffle, The Wobble, The Macarena, and The Cha Cha Slide, plus a few other short ones.  They love it.  Sometimes when they leave school they will be practicing the dances all the way to their houses.

Next Wednesday we will be putting on a recital for the school and some guests from the US.  The students are super excited for it.  Each of the instrument groups have chosen a song they want to play together.  All of the music students have also learned Hot Cross Buns which they will be perform as a whole group.  The students that participate in the dance program will also be performing a medley of the songs we have taught them.  The children are really looking forward to the performance and I be sure to get it on video.  We are holding a final practice tomorrow and a formal rehearsal on Thursday to prepare for next week.  I'm also looking forward to watching them show off all they have learned!!

One day Kwesi and Michael did so well that Kwesi took over my "teacher's chair". Nice.
