They can't go back

May 15, 2013

Katlyn McConnell

This past Monday I was able to visit the kids and drop off monthly support in Jutiapa. I arrived to their house and couldn’t wipe the smile off my face (not that I wanted too!). They were all on the front porch, eating chicken feet and rice. Their hair was combed, they had on new hand-made skirts by the Aunt, and were happy to see me. They looked different.  I wasn’t sure what it was. I wouldn’t find out until later.   “They have very bad behaviors” the Aunt tells me. “Im working hard to pray and change them”. She pulls me aside to ask if I knew about any child abuse. I explained that I knew about a year ago, they were in a bad situation with the neighbor. I knew...

A family in need

May 15, 2013

Katlyn McConnell

It was Sunday evening and Denadi (8 years old) runs up to me “Tomorrow Im going to school, Catalina! My Mom says tomorrow Im going to school!” She was so excited. She was telling me all about her shoes that she washed herself, her school supplies and uniform. I was so happy. I thought to myself finally. Fanny (the mother) had told me Monday they would start. That she would have everything she needed by Monday. Also happening on Monday I had planned to go to Jutiapa (2.5 hours away) with Nayeli (10 years old) to get her school transfer papers. I would have to take Nayeli with me since I do not know the area. This was good. Things were moving along. Even though the parents are showing no interest...

Registration

May 15, 2013

Katlyn McConnell

“Sure, I will register them tomorrow”. That’s what I kept hearing from Fanny about her two children who should have been registered over a month ago. “Well, I can’t find their birth papers” or “I work during the day”. It was excuse after excuse with her. I tried to talk to Danillo (the dad) but that was of no use. He told me he didn’t have the money to register them. All he needed was 50 cents per child to get new birth papers, get them copied, then taken to the school for the director. I gave him the money and he promised to register the kids the next day. Nothing. I have spent countless hours talking to the family, talking to others in town about these kids who have...

Teaching of the Juveniles by my Colleagues By Deborah Nyambu                                                                                                                                15th April 2013 On 12th April, we went to the Juvenile Remand Prison at Industrial Area.  This time round I was not to teach, my colleagues Nelson, Joyce and Muli were to train the Juveniles.  After the introductions, Nelson took the students through training on avoiding bad behaviour and staying focussed on building their lives.  The juveniles were very responsive and in high moods as they cheered and readily asked questions which were adequately answered by Joyce and Muli.  We got back to the organisation base and had a recap meeting of how it all went. Self Esteem for Life

Self- Esteem for life By Deborah Nyambu                                                                                                                                11th April 2013 Have you ever been near a person with low self-esteem?  They just make you feel like they are dragging you down with their low self-esteem…… as low as their shoulders can drag them low!! This was the topic for the Juveniles on 5th April, 2013.  I had with me two pictures, one showing how we look like when we are young, full of energy and bubbly words and the other how our self-esteem gets deflated out of us as we grow up.  So who deflates our self-esteem as we are growing up?  This could be our teachers, parents, friends or even our siblings! So what is self-esteem?  It is actually how we feel about ourselves.  If you feel bad about yourself and don’t...

The Choices We Make in life By Deborah Nyambu                                                                27th March 2013 I first met James Ouma, The Director of Life song Reading club while volunteering for NPC Woodley Church Primary School, PPI Outreach program.  He introduced me to his Juvenile Prison program and later to Omprakash Foundation.  During my second teaching interaction with the Juveniles, who were mainly between the ages of 13 to 17 on 15th March 2013 through I noticed that they were not only more eager to learn but were also more receptive to what I was teaching them.  I began by recapping on what we had done in the last...

SKIP - Supporting Kids In Peru, Peru
Sam Webb

Here is a story that I wrote in March at the end of the Summer Camp. Due to website changes I haven't een able to post it until, but it is still probably worth posting it now! I will include some updates on more of our recent projects soon. But I have already added a short video we created in March - check it out!  So the summer vacation club here in Peru has come to a close. It has been a fun 6 week programme for the kids with plenty of both academic classes as well as more fun and creative aspects of learning such as art, sport and photography. I personally have been working mainly with the secondary aged kids, 14-18, in running two photography sessions a week for...
