Campemento!

July 19, 2012

Asociacion CREAR, Costa Rica
Tess McGrath

This past week, the CREAR team pulled together to provide a wildly successful summercamp to two communities in the Guanacaste area. In Samara and El Torito, the children attended camp for 3-4 hours each day participating in a variety of activities from surf lessons, eco-walks, chalk making, dancing and olympic games to top off the week. For me, the highlight of camp was the culmination of the week when we brought together both communities, Samara and El Torito, to compete in multiple events at the olympic games! We split the kids into 5 different teams and had them create mascots and banners to represent their teams. We had leones, oso polars, leopardos, ardillas, and dragones. There were seven different games in the olympics including dizzy bat races, crane stand (standing on one leg competition),egg race (race with...

Saying goodbye

Put Them First, Peru
Joyce Kim

My term with PTF is over! My last few weeks were gone in a flash, and my last few days were wonderful, but sad. I grew so close to so many of the children at the library and especially the young ones in my class, whom I worked with one- on- one 6 days week.I couldn't have asked for a better last day. I bought bubbles for the kids, and they treated it like it was pure gold. They ran around, blowing and catching bubbles, giggling, and were so grateful for such a small gift. It brought SO much joy to their simple lives, and that was simultaneously so encouraging and sad to see... It reminded me again how little they receive in life. I had a day of hugs...

Bubbles on my last day!

My Progress Report

July 17, 2012

Seeds of Hope, Peru
Madeleine Sophie

The following is a Progress Report on my work done here at Seeds of Hope since I started working as International Coordinator since May 2012 based on the objectives I had proposed as an Omprakash Volunteer Grant Recipient. Outreach, Social Media, Multimedia Stories and Sharing Ressources are the themes I had planned on doing. I will describe what I have done up to know and what I will do before the end of the year.It is expected of me to make a long-term commitment towards Omprakash by spreading the work, recruiting new Partners abroad, advertising volunteer opportunities in my home community, or inviting more teachers and students to participate in Omprakash´s Classroom Program. As of now I have focused on recruiting Partners abroad. I am in the process of...

My Time in Kawempe

Kawempe Youth Centre, Uganda
Justin Gilbert

I have recently returned from a visit to the most beautiful country in Africa: Uganda. I went for six weeks to visit my girlfriend Cassandra who is working for an NGO in Kampala all summer. During my stay I was accepted as a volunteer at the Kawempe Youth Centre. The goal of the centre, which has been successfully operating for over 10 years now, is to empower youth and community members through literacy and access to educational resources. The centre provides internet access as well is computer competency training of several types. There is an excellent collection of literature in the library as well as a children's library and a mobile library program which provides reading material to local schoolchildren. I am currently studying to become a high school teacher, and...

Two weeks ago,i was privilaged to travel to Kawempe Uganda to collect some project and volunteer stories from Kawempe Youth center,an omprakash partner in Uganda.Part of the project am doing entails collecting stories from volunteers and using the stories during my presentation in the High school programme which i will be launching soon. The reason am doing this is to let other prospective volunteers especially those from high schools learn from the work of others, and am happy Omprakash has provided me with the platform and resources to see that this dream come to pass.My long term vision is to see that ompraksh volunteer database in africa expand so that we be part of the needed change in africa, and so that we discourage the interdependancy on foreign volunteers;Only by doing this will...

An Oasis of Hope at Kawempe Uganda

I read somewhere in a book, and it’s a statement commonly repeated, that if you want to hide any information from Africans, then you can easily hide it in books. Achieving Universal education for all is one of UN’s fundamentals, and that’s why it is among the MDGs. While many agree that African countries are rapidly improving their education system, many still think and conclude that there is a lot to be done. Research has shown that many students in African schools study to pass the exams rather than to gain information and be informed and/or even build their vocabulary. Thumbs up for countries that have started to recognize the importance of information and how powerfully it can build its people and the nation. Thumbs up even for organizations like...

LHA Dharamsala, North India

Terry Wilkinson

I have been helping out at LHA for two and a half months now. I am teaching basic computers skills to Tibetan Refugees. The experience is very rewarding and the Tibetans are just the nicest people you could want to meet. I would recommend LHA as a place to volunteer as it is well organised and the staff here are very good and extremely helpful. Terry
