Mission Statement

SAEP is a small, award-winning non-profit organization dedicated to helping children and youth in South Africa's impoverished townships through educational support at every level of academic development.SAEP began working in the community of Philippi in 1998, when it launched an after-school environmental education club. Over the years, its offerings grew as students requested debate teams, poetry workshops and help with math and English. It also branched out to work with township preschools (educare centres) and to offer a "bridging year" program for high school graduates.Today, SAEP runs seven educational programmes from the early childhood to university level, which reach over 2,500 people each year.

SAEP does not charge volunteers for placements as long as they can commit a minimum of three months to the organisation.

We recommend volunteers budget +/- $1,000 per month when volunteering at SAEP to cover accommodation, food, transportation, airtime and internet, and recreation. Some volunteers have found they can get by on less; others who plan to do a lot of travelling while in South Africa may want to budget more. SAEP can provide more detailed information about volunteer budgeting on request.

SAEP does not arrange accommodation for volunteers, but can point volunteers to reputable landlords and housing providers upon request. Many volunteers choose to live in the neighbourhoods of Observatory, Mowbray or Rosebank, which are within walking distance of our offices, or Rondebosch, which is also a short commute away.

SAEP is conveniently located on minitaxi, train and bus routes and most volunteers travel to and from work by public transportation. Transportation from SAEP's office to its projects is provided by the organisation.

Travel Logistics

Much of SAEP's work is carried out by volunteers, and our volunteer needs vary depending on current activities and needs.

We recommend volunteers come for as long as possible, ideally for 6 months to a year. Volunteers who are able to stay for at least 2-3 months can make a significant contribution, but we ask short-term volunteers (people who stay for less than three months) to raise funds to help cover SAEP's project costs.

SAEP currently runs seven programs:

- The Hope Scholars Program provides intensive tutoring, mentorship and enrichment activities to promising high school learners, starting in Grade 9 and following them through to Grade 12.
- The ADT Teach Program uses mobile computer labs to teach computer skills to students in Grades 10-12.
- The Arts Outreach Program runs after-school workshops for at-risk youth in a variety of artistic disciplines, including creative writing, visual art, drama, dance, photography and music, and takes participants on cultural excursions.
- The Environmental Education Program runs after-school environmental awareness clubs, and participants in all SAEP youth programmes are exposed to nature through hikes and outings to develop environmental awareness, teamwork and leadership.
- The Bridging Year Program prepares promising high school graduates from under-resourced schools for success in university through tutoring, mentoring, career counselling, skills development and community service.
- The Tertiary Support Program provides academic, financial and psycho-social support to our bridging year alumni to help them succeed academically, socially and emotionally in higher education.
- SAEP also houses the Center for Innovative Education and Community Service, its research and development arm, which monitors and evaluates its work, conducts research, incubates new programmes, promotes community service, and contributes to dialogue on education in South Africa.
