Current Projects
We are currently seeking licensed and trained psychologists, as well as experts to aid in the development of a series of weekend getaways for troubled children in the area coming from schools. We believe that with the right staff nature can become a safe haven for the children. The weekends would include two to three nights camping in the surrounding areas and the development of a series of training sessions to teach children how to constructively respond to certain situations.
On the other hand, to announce that we are expanding and start building the third story of the house,( June 2010) so in time we will set up an orphanage center where volunteers can support directly to children. In consequence, due to the growing need of funds, each volunteer that is interested to support troubled children and the future orphanage, needs to establish a fundraising effort (min. $300) before arriving and agree to aid leading the children and the building.
The $200 placement fee does not take the place of the necessary fundraising but will be spent on food, medicine, transportation, and clothes for the children in the program.
Once the program is established, we welcome volunteers of varying experience to aid the in implementation of the weekend getaways.
Partner Needs
Teach Huaraz Peru is expanding and for this reason needs are also growing.
We are building the third story of the volunteer house in order to set up an orphanage for children who are abandoned by their parents.
At the same we are in the process of building the third floor of the family house to give shelter to patient parents or relatives who come from far or other cities than Huaraz and have no where to stay.
Financial Needs
To cover all the construction we will need more than $ 20 000 . Until now, we are covering the construction with the money currently volunteers are paying for the placements we organize for them.
After having finished the construction we will need final support to make sustainable the shelter and the orphanage.
In Kind Needs
As we mentioned before, we would like to have a permanent financial support to keep our projects going, what volunteers pay for placements don't help as much as we would like.
Mission Statement
Teach Huaraz Peru offers a range of volunteering opportunities to truly assist the local people of all ages and backgrounds. Each placement is personalized to suit your individual interests and skills and may be arranged at one or more of these educational, learning and social support centers:
- Preliminary Schools
- Primary Schools
- Secondary Schools
- Technical Institutes
- Universities
- Language Centers – for students of any age, including adults
- INABIF – a friendly center for parents and children, who are often very poor, to come to socialize and interact with new people and cultures
Volunteer support is greatly appreciated at these centers within and around Huaraz to help teach English, improve conversational skills and share information about different countries and cultures. It is possible for you to work as many hours as you like within numerous centers and really benefit from your volunteering experience.
Although useful and certainly welcomed, a TEFL (Teach English as a Foreign Language) qualification isn’t necessary to enjoy your volunteering placement. At Teach Huaraz Peru we strongly believe that everybody can make a difference and help those who want to learn.
Teaching English is a fun but challenging activity and it is important to prepare adequately. There are plenty of TEFL websites that offer valuable suggestions for games, activities and lesson plans for all ages and levels, as well as numerous books which can be purchased before departure or borrowed for free from your local library.
Don’t be concerned if you have no teaching experience and feel daunted by the prospect of standing in front of a class of thirty eager students. This is perfectly normal and you will soon find yourself gaining confidence and enjoying the experience immensely.
When you commence teaching you will work alongside a Peruvian teacher who will make you feel at ease and help you in becoming familiar with your students. As you become more comfortable the teacher will give you more responsibility and, if interested, will provide the opportunity to lead classes. There is also the possibility for qualified English teachers to make a little money at the Language Center.
With a professional approach and desire to help you can really make a difference and give something of great value to the Huaraz community.
SUPPORTING LOCAL TEACHERS
Help local teachers with different English workshops in order to give them new ideas, teaching techniques, and opportunities to learn from you and your experience in the teaching field.
