Mission Statement

Kiya (Quilla) is the Quechua word for moon, the symbol of new beginning. Kiya Survivors aims to provide a new beginning for Peruvian children and young people who have special needs or have been abused or abandoned; to gain independence through education and therapy, love and laughter. Director Bio

Suzy Butler At 18, Suzy travelled to South America on a gap year. Kiya was originally founded to support victims of the “el Niño” phenomenon but quickly extended its support to children with special needs living in severe poverty, abused and abandoned children in Peru after Suzy found a young autistic boy on the street, naked and unconscious after a violent attack. The lack of support for children with special needs, pushed Suzy to stay in Peru (for 8 years!) to help.

Individual Volunteer Programme (For individuals aged 18+): Basic programme: Accommodation and tranfers to/from Cusco Airport included. Standard programme: The above + return flights Lima-Cusco, 2 nights in Lima hotel, tour of city of Lima, trip around the sacred valley, spanish lessons and UK training before departure. Full programme: All included in Standard programme + meals at the Rainbow Centre and the Inca trail!!

Accommodation Info

Option one: Volunteer House Self-catered accommodation shared with other volunteers. It includes 5 twin rooms and one single room, a shared bathroom and shower on every floor, a kitchen for communal use including a fridge freezer, stove and sink, a common room and hand-washing facilities. Option two:Homestay (with Delfina and Julio) You will have the opportunity to experience true Peruvian family life. The whole family take a keen interest in life abroad and will love to hear stories about where you come from. It's also a great chance to practise your Spanish! Both houses are near the Rainbow Centre

Travel Logistics

Kiya Survivors runs short and long term volunteer programmes for both individuals and youth groups under 18 with group leaders. Volunteers support our friendly team at the Rainbow Centre in Urubamba, near Cusco, Peru. Volunteers on the Basic programme are met at Cusco airport, and those opting for the standard or full programmes will be met at Lima airport, have to days to explore the capital before being taken back to the airport and flying on to Cusco Airport (where they will be collected and taken to Urubamba.) Rainbow Centre:
The Rainbow Centre (Centro Arco Iris) based in Urubamba, Cuzco was the first centre opened by Kiya Survivors. It is the only centre dedicated to special needs in the Sacred Valley. It was officially opened on the 28th February 2002 and now works with over 50 children and young people
(read more)The Rainbow Centre (Centro Arco Iris) based in Urubamba, Cuzco was the first centre opened by Kiya Survivors. It is the only centre dedicated to special needs in the Sacred Valley. It was officially opened on the 28th February 2002 and now works with over 50 children and young people from Urubamba and surrounding villages who have some form of special needs (speech or visual/hearing problems, autism, Down’s Syndrome, cerebral palsy or have suffered abuse).The centre has three classrooms catering for primary age children and young adults, two therapy rooms, administrative offices, a theatre, a covered eating area and kitchen, a school shop, a farm, a football pitch and offers a dynamic and exciting programme to our students and their families. We offer rehabilitation and free physiotherapy to children and young people in need. We have many babies, children and young adults who attend several times a week to take advantage of this unique service.We offer social work and psychological services to the families of the children and once a month we run a parent workshop, giving education, advice and support to our parent group.Our students range from 4 years to 25 years old.The Rainbow HouseFor years Kiya Survivors had been looking for a solution to the dilemma of where to safely house children with special needs who had been orphaned, abandoned or abused. None of the orphanages near to The Rainbow Centre would accept children with special needs or had adequate staff or facilities. Faced with a number of children living in desperate poverty and suffering abuse, Kiya Survivors decided to open The Rainbow House.In early 2007 the mother of a family of six children at the forefront of our concerns died suddenly and unexpectedly. The children had been living in conditions of extreme poverty, abuse and neglect. After the death of their mother their father agreed that he was unable to look after them, due to his problem with alcohol abuse and the high level of needs of his children; three of the six children have some form of special need.And so the Rainbow House was born.Kiya Survivors currently rents a beautiful two storey house with garden in Uramamba where children can live happily and safely.
