Athletes United for Social Justice
USA
The Grassroot Project is one of the first 501(c)(3) organizations to be designed, initiated, and managed by NCAA Division I varsity athletes. It uses the platform and universal language of sports and the role model status of local athletes to engage youth in educational outreach about HIV/AIDS. Today, more than 200 athletes from 30 sports teams at Georgetown, Howard, and George Washington Universities have been trained to run semester-long programs in 23 DC middle schools, and we have exposed our 8-week, games-based program to more than 500 at-risk youth. These programs have proven to be effective in significantly reducing sexual risk behavior, decreasing stigma, and improving students' HIV-related knowledge, attitudes, communication, and decision-making.

Partner Needs
Our organization has had more than 200 volunteers in our short history (1.5 years). We have had 2 interns - one graduate of Bates University who helped us coordinate an international exchange trip (www.teamup2010.org), and a Duke University undergraduate who helped us write grants.
