Honduras Children

Honduras

HondurasChildren is a small NGO based in the United States.   With four “hands on” board members and a crew of dedicated volunteers from all over the world, we operate a Kinder / Daycare in the seaside village of El Porvenir. Our volunteers also staff a local English project that we call PEP” (Porvenir English Program) and work at two local orphanages providing enrichment activities such as academic help, creative arts and sports.  We regularly host  university groups and youth-groups and have ongoing teams from Duke University and  Virginia Tech.

By facilitating the interaction between culturally deprived children and our amazing, caring sponsors and volunteers, we expand the children’s horizons while in turn, providing our volunteers and sponsors with life changing opportunities to give to children who deserve so much more than they have.

Current Projects

• Kinder / daycare in El Porvenir

• PEP (Porvenir English Program)

• ACE (Academic and Creative Enrichment for children living in Children's Homes / orphanages)

• VAP (vacation Activities Program)

Partner Needs

Our projects operate with 100% volunteer labor:  The in-Honduras volunteers are the cornerstone of our work. We seek volunteers with a red-hot motivation, relevant talents and some background to help make a difference in the lives of impoverished Honduran children.  Some ability to speak Spanish is a plus but not a requirement. Flexibility, collaboration and problem solving skills are a must!

We welcome volunteers of any race, religion or country of origin. We prefer volunteers of 20 years and older and are especially interested in long-term volunteers.  Although the minimum volunteer period is typically 6 weeks, we can sometimes welcome volunteers for shorter periods so do not hesitate to apply.

Financial Needs

“Breakfast Club”, $15. per mo. sponsors, are needed to  help provide a morning meal for 25 pre-schoolers at the Porvenir Kinder!

HondurasChildren offers both child sponsorship and project sponsorship.  Our biggest need at the moment is for sponsors to help us expand the reach of the “Breakfast Club” project at the Kinder.  This project supplies breakfast, including milk and fresh fruit to the 25+ children who attend our Kinder in El Porvenir.    We are seeking 12 more sponsors at $15. per month to maintain this daily breakfast for the children.

In Kind Needs

Luggage List / Wish List

Sometimes we are asked if there are items that visitors and volunteers can bring to donate to the children and the projects.  The following is a list of some general items that will fit in your suitcase.

The highest priority items are:

•  Chewable multi-vitamins.

•  Dry Erase Markers

•  Children's books in SPANISH!

Our greatest need is always for operating funds!!

4/26/12 - Wish List Alert : Charlie is hoping for a good quality new or used projector that can be used to reinstate “movie nights”  for the children and their families.   We have volunteers and visitors from all over the world so it is possible to have the projector shipped to someone who will be arriving soon and they can hand-carry to Honduras. Please contact us at info@honduraschildren.org if you have a projector that you would like to donate!

Toys  (please, no toys that require batteries)

  •  BOOKS, BOOKS and more BOOKS in Spanish
  • craft Items – pipe cleaners, glitter, glue stix, etc.
  • magic markers
  • toy tools, doctor’s kits, firefighter’s hats, etc.
  • WOODEN puzzles w/ BIG pieces
  • games  (w/ directions in Spanish)

Thoughts about TOYS: Please, no toys that require batteries. – - Also, while we understand that you might like to give a gift to every child, it really makes more sense to choose something for the group that can be used over and over again.

Note – Children’s Day is September 10th – - we always need small toys to put in a “goodie bag” type of gift!

Clothing

New Flip Flops 2 We appreciate new and used children’s clothing in all sizes.  We are a small volunteer organization so we do not have the capability to sort and discard clothing that is stained or damaged.  Please only bring clothing in new or  ‘like new’ condition. Honduras is HOT so we do not typically need sweaters or sweatshirts. Shorts, t-shirts, tank-tops and skirts are great.  The children would certainly appreciate light-weight rain shells.  New Flip Flops are always a treat!

School Supplies

  • children’s books in Spanish
  • ESL books for learning English (multiple copies of the same book)
  • black, school shoes and white socks (boys/girls all sizes)
  • white, short-sleeve, button down shirts for school (boy/girl all sizes
  • navy blue, school skirts and pants
  • pencils and pens
  • Spanish / English dictionaries
  • calculators
  • good quality scissors  (we have lots of dull plastic ones!)

  • PAPER plates (not plastic or styrofoam)
  • hand towels and bath towels
  • baby wipes
  • kitchen size trash bags
  • large paper lawn and leaf bags
  • shower curtains & rings
  • hand soap   • shampoo   • toothpaste   • toothbrushes   • hairbrushes

Mission Statement

Our work with children . . .

We want our children to make good choices, so we help them distinguish between fact, opinion, interpretation, and judgment.

We encourage creative problem solving – - so we inspire children to use their imaginations.

We support our children as critical thinkers, so we invite them to ask questions and evaluate potential answers.

We expect our children to become engaged citizens – - so we hold them accountable for their actions.

We wish for our children to live in a peaceful world, so we model solving conflicts without violence.
