Using plastic zip-lock bags as gloves (rubber gloves are hard to come by in El Porvenir... haha), we ended up with 40 bags full of trash that day! This is a picture of the trash truck we called to come pick all of it up for us at the end of the day. | Handing out toothbrushes by Sarah Moye | Protect our Environment booklets by Sarah Moye we made little booklets on ways we can protect our environment - such as not cutting down trees, turning the lights off when we leave a room, carpooling, throwing all trash in trash cans and not on the ground, etc... | health week by Sarah Moye This was just before we taught them all how to count their heart rate. Afterwards, we did exercises and had them check their heart rate again to see the difference! | some exercises during health week by Sarah Moye | my buddies leaning on me while Emily reads us a story by Sarah Moye | me and Daniel by Sarah Moye | clean-up day! by Sarah Moye | clean-up day! by Sarah Moye |

Hey! Check out our new volunteer recruitment video donated to us by Denise and Sean at ChangeStream Media!
| The beach along the north coast, in the town of El Porvenir | A couple of the local children in El Porvenir, Atlantida, Honduras, in front of their home | The local public kinder in El Porvenir, Honduras, where upwards of 50 children receive their education until they move on to first grade. | Despite the poverty and tropical heat, there is a lot to admire in El Porvenir, not the least of which is the beautiful natural scenery! | Pictorial representation of my thoughts on development as a pyramid | PASA Workshop #1 Teachers learned about the development of a child's brain and how to utilize the natural trajectory of development to enhance learning. | PASA Workshop #1 Lunch Sixteen Honduran teachers used the opportunity (and groups purposely formed to encourage new connections across grades and geographic areas) to discuss their classroom techniques and challenges with each other. | Kinder El Porvenir This is the exterior structure of one of the more well financed public kinders in the area. | Kinder Caracas This is one of the poorest school structures I have ever come across in Honduras. I cannot imagine how school could even try to occur when the weather is bad, and while I know how common this is in many places in the world, the fact that this structure stands next to a sturdily built elementary school drives home to me that this is not how it has to be. | Counting in Gancho This kinder group was working on counting and quantifying up to 7 using their steps (then counting...and walking...backwards, too!) It was a great example of the kind of active learning so many children here need. | Learning about birds and mammals in Porvenir This teacher brought in one of the student's collection of animals to let the kids explore the differences between birds and mammals. Great use of local resources! | Waiting for a Ride in Montevideo After one of my classroom visits to a far flung rural community called Montevideo, I had to wait to find someone going towards El Porvenir to hitch a ride back towards town. I passed the time with some of the local kids, eating liche fruits, making dolls out of sugar cane and liche skins, and teaching the kids how to make cups, puppets, and airplanes with the paper in my notebook. Some of the best memories are the unexpected ones, often when I get stuck some place and get to really spend time with the locals. | Municipal Building El Porvenir This is the municipal building, which the Mayor of El Porvenir kindly allowed us to use a a workshop space without charge. | Claritza working with fine motor activities The teachers spent time in centers, just as their students might. Here a first grade teacher, Claritza, engages with fine motor activities. Stenciling helps children hone their use of both hands, one to help hold the stencil and the other to trace it. | Discussion and Activity among Teachers in El Porvenir Teachers enjoyed the opportunities to engage in activities that could give them insight into children's thinking and learning. Groups were purposely formed to build new relationships among teachers from different locales and of different age groups. These moments regularly turned into deep and engaging discussions of techniques and challenges they all face in their diverse schools. | ![]() Bottle Rockets | ![]() Feliz Navidad | ![]() VAP | ![]() 4 Square | Allen and Maryeli two things the kids love - doing the splits and getting their picture taken! | At the beach | El Porvenir's beach | Keylin with her balloons! | Eduardo and Cesiah, two of our PEP kids | more dancing during a PEP celebration | Nicol and Maryeli Nicol and Maryeli enjoying some tasty treats at one of our PEP celebrations | Heydi and Kenneth two more cuties at a goodbye party for one of the long-term volunteers | musical chairs | fun at the beach | happy volunteers ready to head out to Cayos Cochinos! another benefit of volunteering in El Porvenir...weekend trips to the islands! | soccer camp | soccer camp! | never too young to start playing soccer! | El Porvenir | El Porvenir | enjoying some mamones! | 4th of July BBQ Celebrating 4th of July with friends from the United States, Scotland, England, and Honduras | ![]() Volunteer in Honduras | ![]() Provenir English Program | El Porvenir | View on the BUS | Second Grade Class | LUNCH TIME |

| The Reader's Club HondurasChildren The Reader's Club is a new program that started in Feb 2012. It was in response to the fact that children were signing up to take English but were barely literate in Spanish! This volunteer-powered program immerses the children in reading and writing thru fun activities such as story-time, journaling, putting on plays, singing, etc. | ![]() Honduras Child Alliance
