I really was able to learn a great deal of Cameroon, and also it helped me figure out ways I can incorporate service into my future life.
Did you feel like you made a difference?:
Working at the health clinic sometimes I felt like I really wasn't contributing a whole lot. They have a very full staff, and do not have a lot of needs. However, giving the community health presentations I felt I was able to make an impact.
Organization and communication:
I felt like the organization was very organized, however at times I wish there could have been more collaboration on how to best do the health presentations. I felt like I was working alone on this project, it would have been nice if there was another volunteer interested in public health who could have worked with me.
Accommodation:
My apartment was very nice, and the organization went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable.
Safety:
There was never a moment that I felt unsafe.
Spending two months in a foreign country all by yourself is an experience that can stand alone, however add to that serving as a community health volunteer makes it an exceptional experience. My time was split primarily between three activities: working in a small health clinic, preparing health education materials, and giving community health presentations.
At the clinic I was able to learn a great deal about the health issues affecting people in Buea: HIV/AIDS, malaria, typhoid, and diabetes, to name a few. Preparing educational materials presented a unique challenge, as I had to do a fair amount of research, but then had to distill the information down so that in was understandable. I really enjoyed giving community health presentations. My presentations covered a wide variety of topics including sex education, malaria prevention, and sanitation.
Through my experience in Cameroon I was able to grow as an individual, and increase my knowledge of the developing world. It also gave me a wealth of knowledge in how to go about my next volunteer experience.

Practically speaking, the organization is one person, the CEO, who works with international and several local volunteers to establish and complete projects. There is a need for organizational capacity building, better systems of accountability, greater liaison with and support from the local community and recruitment of local volunteers with community status and community development skills if this organization is to gain credibility as an effective NGO
Did you feel like you made a difference?:
This is an ongoing project with several stages. First stage was the project development and the organisational capacity building of SDI. Major goals were accomplished.
Organization and communication:
Very Good - I received replies to all my emails usually within a day of sending them. Clear job description of tasks. Met at airport on arrival. CEO supportive and helpful.
Accommodation:
Home Stay with very caring homestay family in very nice house two storied house with TV. See note below re hygiene.
Safety:
Local transport used to get around is shared taxis from accomodation to SDI office and to meetings with communities. These are not always driven safely and cars are often in poor road worthy condition. Some normal (for many people in Cameroon) hygiene issues with homestay accomodation - no running water for bathing -( bucket wash) and mice in bedroom.
My return to Cameroon after 4 years was in the middle of the rainy season, arriving in the wettest area in the world - so I was told by the locals - home for 2 months was Buea and my volunteer work involved visiting the surrounding villages located at the foot of Mount Cameroon, to identify and work with motivated communities interested in establishing their own community managed early childhood education centre. Quite honestly I have never seen so much rain in my life!! A bit of a change from the deserts of Abu Dhabi where I hadn't seen rain for over a year. And it was surprisingly cool - but nicer though than the sticky humidity of Douala. A typical day started with greetings from my wonderful, caring host family, a chorus of loud church music on the radio, a hopeful thought that I just might see the sun today, and then some agile rock hopping along muddy paths that were flowing streams of water, brolly in hand,to reach main roads, shared taxis and the SDI office. Moving around in the decrepit shared taxis was a highlight of my day - I was always so amazed and happy to safely reach my destination! Nice way to get to know the locals too.People were very helpful and accomodating - my English easily understood and I could understand some of their pidgin. Would like to have left out boiling the water and the daily bucket wash,(the absolute joy of a shower after 2 months of bucket washes was indescribable) and handwashing all my clothes for 2 months - the inventor of washing machines deserves a gold medal! Found time to travel to the Sultan's palace in Foumban, Limbe Wildlife park, Kribi's beautiful beach, visit Baka Forest people and experience the busy, colorful markets full of traditional foods and vibrant people. Great satisfaction from the two way sharing of knowledge and skills that happens when living and working in a different culture. The early childhood education development(ECED) project is ongoing and a long term committment for SDI, the communities and myself as an SDI ECED volunteer.I would be happy to answer any questions for anyone interested in volunteering with SDI.

(show more)The suffering due to HIV and AIDS has been devastating. Despite widespread knowledge of the existence of HIV and AIDS, stigma and misunderstanding are still widespread. It is necessary to raise awareness about how HIV is spread, develop to AIDS and the importance of getting tested.
Knowledge is power when it comes to fighting HIV and AIDS. There are many ways to engage communities. Public awareness teams can casually speak to people in the community about HIV and AIDS, helping to make it more acceptable in everyday conversation. Campaigns using local forms of media, such as the posters, bill boards, hand bills, radio talk show, cable TV video clip, encourage people to learn more. Alternatively, peer-to-peer presentations are another effective way to help raise awareness.
