Mission Statement

The Sexto Sol Center serves impoverished communities in Chiapas and Guatemala where a change of vision paired with the appropriate technical assistance helps people to create a better life while protecting the environment. We promote the ethic of “community action” whereby people work together to create solutions that benefit everyone. Since 1997 we have assisted people to create success with cooperative businesses, grow healthful food, improve neglected schools, regain cultural pride, protect the watershed, create eco-villages and heal from the trauma of disaster and war. We advocate internationally for the respect of indigenous human rights and environmental and economic justice.

Director Bio

Tamara Brennan Tamara Brennan, Ph.D. is a sociocultural-community psychologist and long-time activist for the respect of the rights of indigenous peoples and the natural world. She is a organic gardener and permaculturist, poet, and healer. She is dedicated to furthering policy on the international level that will create a more sustainable and humane world in which all people thrive. Sexto Sol's International Partners for Healing program brings together her experience working with land-based communities affected by war and mining and her long search for effective ways to help people heal from traumatic experiences. Tamara is Sexto Sol's volunteer coordinator and webmaster.

The Sexto Sol Center has a furnished guesthouse at our field school that we offer to volunteers for a modest weekly fee. Volunteers cook their own food. The view of the city below and surrounding mountains is spectacular. We can accomodate single people or couples. The town of Motozintla is a short walk away where there are is a hospital, internet, post office and open market and large stores accessible by walking. We are also on the edge of the rural mountainous area so there are nice walks into the pine trees. Motozintla is accessible by bus or local minivan. We are on the highway between Comalapa and Huxitla. Buses from San Cristobal cost about 20 dollars.

Accommodation Info

Volunteers who come to Mexico to work with Sexto Sol can stay in our questhouse for a small weekly donation. The house is located at our permaculture school where our office is located about a 10 minute walk to the City of Motozintla. The view of the Sierra is spectacular. Volunteers are responsible for their own food costs and preparation. We also appreciate volunteer help from people who help from home. That collaboration happens via email.

Travel Logistics

Our needs vary depending on what projects we are working on at any time. We ask prospective volunteers to email us in advance to find out what our needs are during the time that they want to volunteer. There are occasionally opportunities in Guatemala. Please check with us.
