Over the last year we have been collaborating with Asociación Il Nido del Gufo-Colombia, a cultural center and library located in the heart of the neighborhood and based in Italy, on various initiatives to build a culture of peace in Suba. Those events included a workshop on communication and radio, a week of art and organizing activities on non-violence, a Peace March, and the start of an environmental classroom. And now, we are set to collaborate on yet another initiative to strengthen the presence of popular education, safe spaces for peaceful dialogue, cultural conservation, and environmental sustainability in the neighborhood. Sound ambitious? It is. But with our combined years of experience, the institutional history of Il Nido del Gufo, and YOUR support, it is more than possible. The plan is to start an alternative pedagogy school for kids ages 6-10 who have been pushed out of the school system. By utilizing the spaces of the already existing library building, we will teach the standard subjects of math, science, physical education, computer science, history, language, and literature, but with an important twist. All of the subjects will be taught through a non-conventional medium: science learned in the environmental classroom; math learned with directed games; physical education and history learned through folkloric dancing; and language and computer science learned through transnational video-conferencing.In early, February, we will begin a pilot project that will run for 8 months. The goals of the pilot will be to start working with kids as soon as possible, to fine-tune the programming, to establish rapport with the community, and to build a strong base of supporters in solidarity with the project. We invite you to be a part of this exciting and important initiative from its very start! We are offering "Solidarity Bonds" to support specific components of the pilot project and ensure that those components become a reality. Areas in need of your support include urban agriculture, literacy, folkloric dance, theatre, and sports. The "interest" of these bonds will be repaid to you by the growth of each student and family that is able to access the school -- a growth which is by no means fixed! Please take a moment to review the different "Solidarity Bonds" and decide which program you would like to support.Post a message to our Facebook page with love and support!Additionally, through this new initiative we will be offering new volunteer positions in the Omprakash network. The start of a school is a complex process, and although we rely on the various communities of the neighborhoods in Suba for the core of our programming and support, we also welcome new perspectives, energies, and hands. So if you are impassioned by popular education and alternative pedagogies, environmental sustainability and urban gardens, peaceful resolution to conflict and non-violence, global citizenship and transnational solidarity, then send us a message.
