Movement for Rural Emancipation (MORE)
MADANAPALLE, Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh, India
MORE is based at Madanapalle in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. It works with marginalized groups of people in order to include them in the process of development. Persons with Disabilities (PWD), Persons living with HIV and AIDS, dalits, religious and ethnic minorities, women and children constitute the target groups of the organization. MORE understands poverty as “capability-deprivation” in the form of ignorance, oppression and lack of financial resources. In order to bring the target groups out from the clutches of poverty “capabilities” based on personal and social circumstances need to be built. MORE has adopted Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) to build people’s capabilities and bring freedom from disabling barriers.
MORE has carried out a CBR project (called Bahuda) in 300 villages of Chittoor district. ActionAid supported this 10 year long project (1999-2008). An impact evaluation of this endeavor was carried out in 2009 which highlighted the project’s achievements such as promoting PWD leadership and developing of 45 CBR deliverables. These deliverables explicitly address certain “red alerts” that come in the way of education, health and activities of daily living skills (ADLS) of PWD. The impact evaluation recommended that MORE was capable of scaling up of CBR in new mandals.
In order to spread the strategy of CBR in new mandals MORE initiated a new project called Maitri, meaning alliance. It is an alliance of poor and marginalized people to build their own capabilities in order to live in dignity accessing basic entitlements and human security. Cordaid has committed to support Maitri project for five years (2009-13) in 18 select panchayats spread over 6 mandals.
