Overall Rating:
For me, having a good experience means being utilized as a volunteer and working closely with the staff. Both of these requirements for a good experience were met.
Did you feel like you made a difference?:
It's really difficult to measure this, but I made a difference by exploring grant opportunities and participating in building new programs.
Organization and communication:
I have volunteered for a variety of NGOs, and know that this is closely connected with having a good experience. I was given concrete tasks and told when they needed to be done.
Accommodation:
N/A, because I had my own accommodations through a local university. But the office provides outstanding accommodations for work.
Safety:
No safety issues
One of the things I loved about volunteering with Children of Shambala was the strength in relationships between staff and volunteers. There was a constant feeling of enthusiasm for the work, and I truly felt like I was helping build the organization. The work I did centered around exploring grant opportunities, developing new programs, and helping local staff members with the Orphanage Without Walls project.
What's interesting about this organization is that it works with 6 local grassroots NGOs on one project in different location in western China. This means that a volunteer might work with the CoS main office, or may work with one of our local partner NGOs (I also worked with the Pentok Institute, which is also an Omprakash partner). There is quite a bit to get involved in here.

When I first began volunteering for Children of Shambala I didnt realize what a great experience it would be. The drive for making a difference in this organization is incredible and everyone who I know that has ever worked with them has felt the same way. I am greatly appreciative to the time the leaders of this organization have spent with me. I feel like I have made a strong positive impact on the community, while at the same time growing as a person.
