Partnership with Children Better Way
Children Better Way (CBW) currently operates in the Buduburam refugee camp located in Ghana and in Monrovia, Liberia. Under the motto “Let the children play,” CBW operates a wide range of projects aimed to promote the rehabilitation and further development of the children who have been affected by the conflict in their home country of Liberia. The projects range from educational and recreational programs for the children themselves, to HIV/AIDS awareness and sanitation projects which benefit the wider community. The overall goal of Children Better Way, its volunteers, and the people who donate is to not only provide quality services to these children now but to help prepare them to be future leaders of Liberia. Children Better Way Volunteer Program Introduction
Volunteer opportunities with Children Better Way (www.childrenbetterway.org) will give participants a unique opportunity to witness a successful global intervention in the primary stages of a nation’s redevelopment after civil war. Children Better Way (CBW) has a history in humanitarian programs, primarily education, and is seeking to develop a volunteer program to aid the suffering schools and children of Monrovia’s suburbs. CBW will host, introduce and educate participants about all aspects of Liberian history, give firsthand accounts of living and surviving Liberia’s civil war, and what it means to live in refuge.
Volunteer experiences offer the opportunity to learn and participate in activities that are contributing to the rebuilding of Liberia, observing the determination involved from both the individual and country to recover.
CBW has been operating in the Buduburam refugee Settlement in Ghana for 7 years aiding a suffering community of primarily Liberian refugees, focusing their efforts on children. CBW was conceived in Liberia and returned home in February 2008 to assist in rebuilding their nation; a process that started in June 2007.
Those who participate will explore Liberia’s capital city, Monrovia, and neighbouring suburbs. Volunteers may well visit and assist the development of CBW’s partner schools program in and around Monrovia through activities such as gathering information, facilitating workshops and meeting Liberia’s next generation of country builders. As CBW’s operations grow and the organisations capacity develops, other volunteer experiences may arise due in other program areas.
Volunteers will engage in meetings with government officials, county heads and organisation representatives (UN Departments) which will offer a deeper insight to how the Liberians consider the role of international assistance.
If weather and road conditions allow, volunteers may also be able to embark on a short but unforgettable journey into the heart of Liberia’s interior, visiting the future working locations of CBW activities in the South Eastern Counties of Grand Gedeh and Sinoe, observing a country poor in everything except potential; offering a rare opportunity to experience first hand the rich cultures and bio-diversity found within the interiors rural communities.
CBW and the Buduburam community have benefited greatly from the work of volunteers and believe that a Liberia program could have a similar effect. The invitation to partner with CBW in Liberia is a unique volunteers opportunity and CBW are proud to partner with the Omprakash Foundation. With the scars of war still fresh in a country with little to no tourist activity, initial volunteer opportunities will form the initial stages of encouraging further individuals to join CBW’s Liberian volunteer program. Your participation is laying the foundations of a path CBW hope many will follow.
