The 1913 Kentucky Derby and Changes for New Hope

December 07, 2012

Changes for New Hope, Peru

In 1913 at the annual running of the Kentucky Derby throughbred race, a most amazing thing happened. Roscoe Goose rode his throughbred Donerail, with 91-1 odds against them, to victory. It was the greatest longshot victory in the history of the race.    You may be asking yourself, ¨What does a horse race in Kentucky in 1913 have to do with Changes for New Hope in the Peruvian Andes?¨ Well, nothing really, with one small exception. We both grabbed onto a seemingly impossible challenge and with tenacity and determination, overcame every obstacle to achieve an initially elusive success.     There are a few differences though. While Roscoe and his noble throughbred had a finish line to cross, at Changes for New Hope, we have no finish line. I came...

Kate Gasparrini, volunteer in the organic garden in a psychiatric hospital: “The best moments are when I can have good conversation with the patients”

December 06, 2012

Voluntario Global, Argentina

Name: Kate GasparriniNationality: AmericanOccupation: Non Profit EducatorVolunteering Period: September 2012 – December 2012Email: kate.gasparrini@gmail.com What made you want to apply to volunteer and in particular for the project in the psychiatric hospital?I’ve always liked volunteering, because I thinks it’s a good way to learn about different communities and I wanted to improve my Spanish. Because I studied psychology and I was interested in seeing how mental health treatment is different in other countries than my own. And I want to be a social worker and have contact with people with different mental illnesses, it’s important for me to have that experience. I wanted to come to BA because I came here on vacation last summer and loved it and I wanted to travel and see more of south America. How would you...

A toast to The Laundry Project!

December 06, 2012

Voluntario Global, Argentina

Last Friday, the 30th of November, we celebrated the grand re-opening of the Laundry Project “Su Lavandería”. The cooperative is entering a new phase in their project, so there were plenty of reasons to celebrate! We took a tour from one of the workers, and received an explanation about the new machinery – which increases the capacity of the laundromat. After this brief tour, we had the opportunity to talk with the new team of young people working there. It was a very special occasion to meet the individuals whose lives had been changed in great ways because of this project. The team was very hospitable to us by treating us as friends and offering us drinks, delicious empanadas and cakes. While we were chatting away, there were several activities...

A year after that first boost that Omprakash gave us, not only by donating money for the new machine, but also putting trust in us and saying:"You can achieve a better future for some young people and be an example for many others".That bond and that trust, allowed us to continue looking for ways to grow and create more job opportunities. The new machine that Omprakash donated was added to the Laundry in 2012, and during the same year, another two machines and an iron were bought.Below you will see some testimonials and the official video that tells the story of the Laundry Cooperative. La Loma, Intag, Nov 2012

December 04, 2012

Intag, Ecuador

For future travelers looking for volunteer oppurtunites; this is one of the best I have found so far in my travels. Moving to intag I had no desire to live in San Antonio or even more in the boonies of intag. This program is amazingly flexible. I desired to live closer to Cuellaje because i wanted be be closer to civilization and I got just that. You can live close to the city or as far in the mountain as the program offers. Its completely you choice and the program coordinators will back whatever you decide. I tought English up in Laloma, a community 20 minutes walking distance from Cuellaje, and If it wasn t for my visa, I wouldn t have left. The children in the community were so...

Childline Uganda, Uganda

It is now 10 months since the Today for Tomorrow Programme began, this is indeed unbelievable to me, people around me and the general public about what is happening!!!!!!!And the questions always around me are; how do you do this? I sat down and ranked the so called Orphans and Vulnerable Children,...
