Update on Scotty, our African Hawk Eagle

September 12, 2012

Daktari Bush School and Wildlife Orphanage, South Africa

Today Scotty, our African Hawk Eagle, got her bandage removed. She is still getting used to using her left wing again but appears to be quite happy with her new freedom. The two volunteers taking care of her are sitting in her enclosure when they feed her to get her used to them. Normally she should then be comfortable with these 2 people going in there and disinfecting her wound etc. Let's hope it works and that she will start using her left wing shortly ;)

An unforgettable Kruger-trip!!

September 11, 2012

Daktari Bush School and Wildlife Orphanage, South Africa

Every week one child is chosen that has improved the most and is very interested in Wildlife and environmental issues. They get a Marula tree to plant at home or at school and a free 1-day safari. So Sunday we went to pick up 8 children from the past weeks and drove off to the Kruger National Park!! It was absolutly perfect! The kids loved it and learned so much about South-African Wildlife. The look on their faces everytime they see an animal is exactly why we put all this effort and love into DAKTARI!!

The Life of a Woman in Kenya - Why it’s important for girls to get an education

September 10, 2012

Common Ground for Africa, Kenya

Opportunities in Kenya are lacking for men and women alike, but because women have the responsibility of raising children, it limits their opportunities in many ways. You could say the same thing in America on a basic level. I’m going to talk about the challenges women face in getting employment, and securing it, especially after she has a kid.If an uneducated girl is unlucky, she will have gotten pregnant at a young age and have the burden of raising her kid, possibly with the help of her struggling family. They will live 8-12 people per small mud hut (I mean really small) with no running water or electricity. Her day will be spent walking hours to get water, which will likely be contaminated with typhoid and she won’t have the...

Music makes lives of vulnerable children meaningful hence reform for a sound future. When Henery was 10, his father passed away, leaving his family in poverty. Shortly after, Henery ran away from home, hoping to find a better life on the streets. Instead, he fell into a life of drug abuse and violence, begging to survive at bus stops in Uganda. How Four Months Turned into Eight

September 07, 2012

VE Global, Chile

Robin AndrewsNorth Carolina, USAJuly 2012When I first started looking into volunteering with VE Global, I remember reading the part that said “four month minimum commitment” and wondering if I would be able to commit for that long. Well, eight months later I realized that four months was simply NOT enough time. While volunteering, I worked in Hogar San Francisco, a group home for 30 girls ranging from 3 to 20 years old. I was so nervous in those first few months. I couldn’t understand the Chilean Spanish. I was confused by the customs and I didn’t know what my role was in the hogar. In the first month, I just went through the motions of being there every day and trying to get by doing what they asked me to do...
