Help us Rebuild Following Tropical Storm Isaac

September 03, 2012

European Disaster Volunteers, United Kingdom

On August 24th, Tropical Storm Isaac slammed into Haiti bringing 60 mph winds and torrential rains. Thanks to the hard work of our volunteers and the generosity of our donors, most of our Haitian partners weathered the storm safely in houses and classrooms which were more than able to withstand Isaac’s winds and rain. But at the Hands Together to Defend the Children (HTDC) Orphanage, the classrooms making up the orphanage’s school were still just tents. Isaac destroyed all of the classrooms along with all the benches and chalk boards they contained. The storm also damaged the transformer which supplies power to the orphanage, leaving the children without power. EDV and the leaders of the HTDC orphanage both agree that education is key to building a secure future...

Omprakash Grant Third Report

August 29, 2012

Voluntario Global, Argentina

With the help of Omprakash in 2011, we continue to grow.It is often difficult for a just-started or small organization to receive financial support from national or international organisms. Without a solid background or a celebrity to back you up, it is difficult to generate confidence. Moreover, it is true that small cooperatives have more chances of failure because they learn from experience and have minimal or no planning. However, some institutions and organizations focus on "getting to know the people who carry out the project", and they evaluate from there the feasibility for providing funding. That "seed" and trust has dual merit because it is not just money, but a motivating force to stimulate potential and commitment. It is for this reason that those who first believed in our commitment and...

August 28, 2012

Voluntario Global, Argentina

The beginning of ‘Su Lavandería’…Mariano Saccal is the owner of two successful hostels here in Buenos Aires; I can see this when I arrive to interview him and the social areas are buzzing with people. The Milhouse hostels are the temporary homes for some of the thousands of tourists this city receives every year, but while he may be catering for the needs of student backpackers and travellers from all over the world, Mariano has also played an important part in a very local project. The Laundry Project, or Su Lavandería, established over three years ago thanks to the collaboration of the founders here at Voluntario Global and local business owners such as Mariano, who explains where the idea came from.“I have been in contact with Valeria (co-founder of Voluntario...

Omprakash/AM Cross-Cultural Workshop – Part II: About the Conferences

August 28, 2012

Voluntario Global, Argentina

The first day of the conference:My presentation was the first of the day. Titled ‘Challenges for NGOs and Volunteers’, it proposed a look at the need for organisations to develop, along with educational programmes and training, projects that empower community members in a way that they can develop sustainable activities on the long term, focussing on the development of a social and supportive economy based on cooperativism.Every day it was part of the itinerary to divide up into small groups which enabled us to analyse and exchange detailed topics and issues. These were then shared amongst the other guests in the form of a report. The topics of the small groups had three objectives; some made short presentations about tools to improve the educational programs of the organisations. UPAVIM's first post

August 21, 2012

Unidas Para Vivir Mejor (UPAVIM), Guatemala

UPAVIM is proud and pleased to be a new member of the Omprakash community. We are in the process of putting together a list of future needed volunteers, including a budgeter/accountant, carpenter, development/communications officer, and a social worker. We have had a very exciting week at UPAVIM. Barb Lorraine and Angela Bailon, UPAVIM co-founders, headed to our inaugural New York City Craft Fair. For those that don’t know, UPAVIM is self-sustained on the revenue that is generated from the sales of their crafts. It was an honor to be sponsored to attend the craft fair and even more exciting to have a successful trip. It means big things could be in store for our organization. One of our volunteers, Mariah Horrigan, has been hard at work developing our English program. She took...
