Tap Tap Premiere

On May 25th Haiti Communitere hosted the premiere of Tap Tap, a Haitian-made sitcom filmed on the streets of post-earthquake downtown Port-au-Prince. The cement slab at the back of the base was full of people who came to watch, including the show’s cast. An entry fee of 5 Gourdes (about 13 US cents) was required, just like riding a tap tap. Tap Tap is filmed in Haitian Creole, but soon episode 1 will be available with English subtitles. A preview of episode 2 is now available. Orphanage gets a chicken coop

Dr. Robert runs a foundation on Route 1 in Port-au-Prince, which functions as both a school and an orphanage for children. In order to make his foundation more sustainable, he enlisted the help of HC. With funding from Global Volunteer Network (GVN) and HC’s tools and human resources, a well was dug and most recently, a chicken coop was built on the orphanage property. The fire at the HC workshop delayed the chicken coop construction because tools needed for the project were lost, but thanks to the many people who have donated tools and equipment in the past few weeks, this project was finally able to be completed. HC partner Ti Kay receives donation of much needed medical supplies

When the fire happened at the Haiti Communitere workshop on May 3rd, several 40-foot containers storing tools and medical supplies were destroyed. HC’s longtime partner, Ti Kay, had been storing thousands of dollars’ worth of medical supplies in one of those containers. The most important things lost were the N95 masks that are used by everyone at the TB clinic to protect the staff and volunteers from contracting TB and the patients from spreading the disease.On May 17, 2012 AFYA Foundation filled a small airplane with medicalsupplies at the cost of a dollar per pound. The plane was then flown from New York to Haiti by Bahamas Habitat. The generosity of both of these organizations has saved Ti Kay thousands of dollars and allowed its patients to receive the care...

5 Tips for volunteering in a Community Center

 1. Be curious. While volunteering, try to understand the cultural context of the centre you are working in. Ask questions, talk to the people that work there, so you can really give as much as possible during your time.2. Be a part of the team. The running of community centre depends on your participation as much as that of the coordinator. During your time volunteering you will see that the community centres really do work as a family and rely on the cooperation and support of everyone involved.3. Be flexible. Canine population control in Guatemala.

 Ecoguate is an organization based in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. One of the first proyects of the organization was to consolidate a group of Veterinary Doctors from the area. A group of volunteers who care about the well being of animals, dogs in this case. Our goal is to make an impact on the proliferation of street dogs. The case is, that this population form bands of feral dogs, specially around landfills sites. In Guatemala there are areas where rabies is still a problem, threatening the human population.We, as Veterinary Doctors identified the problem and decided that this huge problem can't wait, needs to be addressed and started to organize these campaigns.  fortunately we already have an exempt status with the SAT (our IRS) and receiving donations from our own countrymen makes...
