The Self Sufficient School

January 10, 2012

Common Ground for Africa, Kenya

The idea of starting a self-sufficient school to provide relevant post-primary education for our young people has been high on our agenda for the last couple of years. The overwhelming evidence of the global development community points to the urgent need for fresh approaches to solving the global problems of food insecurity and youth unemployment. The world has seen, in recent weeks, the consequences of denying young people opportunities to enjoy a stable and prosperous future. Our plans for a self sufficient school are heavily influenced by the work of an organisation called Teach a Man to Fish. IIMPACT, India

Diegueno DaughtersToday, I found myself stepping into a world of hope as I approached a typical Indian village in the foggy countryside of Gurgaon. My eager family and I were greeted by a curious crowd of villagers who left their household chores and followed us down to the school room for the young girls of the village. When we entered the school room, we were given a cheerful, traditional Indian welcome from the students. Eagerly, the girls set to work reciting poetry, singing beautiful songs, and demonstrating their skills in arithmetic. Common Ground for Africa, Kenya

HiI hope I’m not being too presumptuous in thinking you might want to read an e-mail that doesn’t ask you to do a thing! Changes for New Hope, Peru

Upon finishing my Masters in International Development I soon realised I needed volunteering experience in a developing country to begin my career in this field. My requirements were only that it be a country where I could afford to stay for 4 months with my budget, and that the NGO did not charge a ridiculous joining fee. Having just finished the MA I was really keen to put into practice what I’d learnt, so I was looking for an NGO where I could take on some real responsibility and put my ideas forward.   After narrowing down a few options I finally decided on Changes for New Hope, because Jim was very proactive about answering my queries and seemed keen to take on someone with new ideas and lots of...
