Volunteer in Ghana

The Maine-Ghana Youth Network
Accra, Ghana

The Maine-Ghana Youth Network (www.maineghanayouth.org) is a local-global organization working to educate, empower, and inspire youth in Maine and West Africa. In the impoverished Ghanaian neighborhood of Kissehman, we provide desperately needed resources and educational opportunities, meeting children’s basic needs while encouraging them to learn and grow. In Maine, we work with schools, organizations, and youth groups to facilitate exciting cross-cultural exchange. These programs connect young people to the local and global community, and help develop their full potential as tomorrow’s creative, thoughtful leaders.

The Maine Ghana Youth Network offers

programs for kids including:

  • Educational Enrichment
  • Youth Apprenticeship
  • Field Trips
  • Sports/Recreation
  • Arts/Film/Photography
  • Agriculture
  • Peace and Love Dance Ensemble
  • Technology

Despite extremely difficult living conditions, people in Kissehman continue to give to each other and to help each other through hard times. The people are renowned for their friendliness, and it is impossible to go anywhere without shaking at least 20 hands. The people of Kissehman are extremely welcoming and will give strangers their last bit of food without thinking of themselves.
