"La FHR les agradece..." The schoolchildren made this sign on our last day- they threw us a small surprise party! Our hearts melted when we saw this, it was so sweet of them. The children hit handmade piñatas, and we passed out candy. A few of the kids had even prepared short thank you speeches. "La FHR les agradece por la ayuda brindada a nuestros niños de la comunidad. Les deseamos feliz viaje." translated: "The Hilda Rothchild Foundation thanks you for the help you've provided to the children of our community. We wish you a safe/happy trip." | Big Smiles Bryan, Leonel, Edenilson, and Jose with biiiiig smiles! Notice in the background: The nearly empty map stand. The nearly empty shelf. Montessori materials are extremely expensive. This small school in rural El Salvador has managed to purchase a few materials, and on my volunteer trip, my volunteer partner and I brought down over $5000 worth of materials. STILL not enough to fill the shelves, though. Here's a link to a Montessori material making company: http://www.nienhuis.com/go I encourage you to snoop around and check out how expensive these educational materials can be, then take a look at this guide to making low-budget materials which Emma Fullinwider and I created: http://www.omprakash.org/images/userfiles/volunteers/310/0.909955001302566206.pdf
