My goal is to develop a way that documentary film can be used more in the classroom as an educational tool to start discussion among students about human rights issues. I'm currently developing a handout about how to guide students in their discussion following a viewing of a documentary film. I'd also like to compile a list of documentaries by subject, and where to get them, as well as footage that can be found online so that teachers can formulate lesson plans around these doc. films.
The creation of this project came out of the idea that human rights is often approached too abstractly in classrooms, and that the visuals provided by documentary film could help students feel more connected to issues happening hundreds of miles away.
After viewing these films, my hope is that teachers will pose questions to their students, who can then use this website to share their answers with other students are the world.
Skills
I'm very interested in developing my teaching skills, and plan to do so this summer in Kenya at KGSA. The subjects I'm most interested in are women's empowerment and micro-credit (these two ideas intersect nicely).
