2 days to go!print story

May 09, 2012

Taelor Powell

8:30pm on Tuesday, May 8th and I’ve finally gotten around to writing my first journal! In two days at this exact time, I’ll be boarding my flight for Africa; Ghana to be exact. If at all possible to combine the feelings of anxious, excitement, nervousness, caution, and a tad bit of fright, thats the emotion I’d have to say describes best how I’m feeling. I have my passport, my visa, my vaccinations, info about my placement, and even information about my host family...I can finally say that everything’s done! Everything except for my “Goodbye’s”; but those will come soon enough.

I’ve never been out of the country before so this trip will be my first for a lot! I heard about this internship about 2 months ago and after completing the application I’ve been determined to make this journey happen allowing no if’s, and’s, or but’s to get in my way (and trust me, they tried!). Being that everything was in such short notice, I had to pay extra to expedite my passport, pay extra to expedite my visa, along with the program fees and my flight total. We all know money doesn’t grow on trees, so you can just imagine how thankful I am for my mother and of course the donations from everyone that helped me along the way!

I’m looking forward to meeting people; locals, other ProWorld participants, and especially the children I’ll be working with... I’m looking forward to learning the language “Fante”, I’m looking forward to my drumming and dancing lessons, and I’m looking forward to trying many new food recipes...Most of all, I’m looking forward to being apart of such a diverse culture thats well known for it’s rich history.

Since I haven’t yet made it to Ghana, there’s not much that I can write in this journal that you’ll enjoy; however, I will say, stay tuned for all of my journals and pictures to come! I know that very few people get awarded the opportunity that’s been set before me and for that reason I want to do my best to share as many of my experiences with you as I can.

Until next time...
