Back to the Motherland!print story

December 22, 2010

Anoop Jain

Thanks to the generosity of the Omprakash Foundation, I will have an incredible opportunity to head back to India to continue working on my public health projects. I head back to India in February 2011 and I can't wait to get back to work!

I will spend the first half of my trip working with the LHA. We started raising money to build a nutrition center for a community of Tibetan refugees late 2009. By early 2010, we had raised all of the money. I took the money there this past summer and construction of the facility started this past October. I am really excited because we are hopeful that by the time I return in February, the kitchen will be complete and we will be ready to start serving our first meals! While there I will also be working closely with the community to implement a health and nutrition curriculum that will be taught during English lessons.

I will be spending the rest of my time in India working with a new Omprakash partner called Deep Jyoti. I am working with DJ to implement a series of public health solutions. The first solution is to provide the families of our students with toilets. After that, we want to start a small nutrition center that will provide each of our 250 students with at least one, well balanced meal a day. Finally, we want to start a clean water program. Currently, none of our students or their families have access to clean water.

I am so excited to get back to India. I am hopeful that this trip will be extremely productive!
