Our Project (Part 3): Parentsprint story

April 07, 2011

Jon Leposky

If you are a student in high school or even someone who relies on their parents, the first step is to get you and your parents on the same page. If not, ignore this story.

As to how to deal with things between you and your parents is impossible for me to advise on, but I can provide you with some tips that would have helped me.

  • Realize that parents don't think the same way you do. Although an area may be safer than the States on paper, that may not be evidence enough to your parents. Convincing your parents to allow you to do something like this could take a long time of easing into it.

  • Secondly, when you go to your parents, have a plan. If my group was not as organized as we were before we brought it to my parents attention, I guarantee that I would not have made it to Peru and possibly the rest of our group.

  • Third, remember that everybody's parents are different. While your parents may totally be fine with the idea, your friends' parents might not be so keen to the idea. Work with your friend and their parents, although difficult, their is hope.

In summary, this is only one of the many challenges you may face. I'm writing this so you don't make the same mistake I did, going to my parents expecting no troubles.

While convincing my parents took a while and a lot of organizing, once convinced, my parents were and still are thrilled about the idea and supported us fully.
