The "King"print story

May 08, 2012

The King
The baganda people respect and adore their King. I discovered this last week when Kabaka Sabassajja visited Mityana, am told he does this at least twice every year. There are more than 10 Kings from the baganda tribe in Uganda, Sabassajja is one of them. Businesses came to a stand still, you could notice this even one day before his arrival. “The bagandas are crazy for their king, and they will do anything for their beloved king”, one man told me. The roads were tarmarcked and decorated one week before his arrival, you could notice the sudden beauty that became of Mityana, and it was also shown on the faces of the people. More than 300 motor cyclists (boda boda Taxi drivers) conveyed the message, it was not going to be a normal day. They prepared for the King’s arrival with songs and dances, as they waited anxiously for their man. It was pomp and glamour, as the king arrived, welcomed by the locals, some of whom had burnt the midnight oil trying to see that everything went right. At the far end, i stood patiently with the Children as we waited for confirmation of our meeting from John. “The programme is not going to be conducted today”, he said and I suddenly realized that this man Kabaka Sabassajja was truly an important man. He passed the message to the children and their guardians who had brought them and we said goodbye to them
