Week 1: Introductions

June 07, 2012

Rachel Winet

During Week 1, my students created their first posts where they introduced themselves. They explained that they attend Heritage K-8 Charter School, stated their age, and described what they liked to do in their free time. They also talked about their best friends and what they want to be when they grew up. The cameras were used primarily to take pictures of acrostic poems that they wrote as well as to take face shots so that their buddies knew what they looked like.

Culmination of EDELAC and Heritage K-8 Charter School's Photo/Blog Exchange

June 07, 2012

Rachel Winet

My name is Rachel Winet. I teach 5th grade at Heritage K-8 Charter School in Escondido, California. My dear friend, Alyssa Hoyle, is volunteering in a 5th grade classroom at the elementary school EDELAC in Xela, Guatemala. During a 6-week period in the spring of 2012, our 5th grade students participated in a blog/photo exchange. Each week, Alyssa and I provided our students a topic to write about. In California, my students took pictures with these topics in mind, wrote journal entries, and then typed up their blogs in our school computer lab. In Xela, Guatemala, Alyssa translated all of my students’ blogs to Spanish, gathered hand-written letters from her students in Spanish, translated her students’ letters to English, and typed up their responses to my...

Invest2Innovate is filling the void in social entrepreneurship space

May 23, 2012

Invest2Innovate, United States
Asim Hussnain

Invest2innovate (i2i) has been a great support for Milk’Op. Their team, led by the very able and entrepreneurial founder & CEO – Kalsoom Lakhani, has been working very closely with me on refining the business plan and pitching it to potential investors. Start-up stage is particularly challenging for the for-profit social enterprises as there are not many organizations willing to invest in unproven ideas of in-experienced entrepreneurs; this is why i2i’s work is so important. They truly complement passion of social entrepreneurs by matching them with investors and experts. In case of Milk’Op, i2i has not only been working to bring the necessary capital but they have also introduced me to multiple sources of knowledge and related expertise. I am very much impressed with the way they understand...

My blog on the Wagnerathletics.com #1

Asociacion CREAR, Costa Rica
Marie-Laurence Archambault

When I got the amazing opportunity to o volunteer for 3 weeks at CREAR, playa samara, Costa Rica, my college athletics website asked me to write a blog entry every week I was there. Here is my first entry:This year, when I realized I had a passion for volunteering and the Spanish language, I decided to find a place where I could do both. I did a lot of research and I luckily found Asociacion CREAR, an organization that does many cool things with the kids. They do a lot of art projects and sports, and recently they started a surf and lacrosse team through the organization “Fields of Growth.” I was so excited when I learned of this that, before I left, I asked members of our women's lacrosse...
