Unbelievably Amazing Volunteer Experience!

April 15, 2012

Ashraya Initiative for Children, India
Tresta DeLater

Where do you begin to describe the indescribable...volunteering at AIC was truly a life changing experience! I have been involved with this organization for nearly four years and am so proud to be part of something that has changed so many lives. Initially, I committed to four months and ended up staying for over two years. I would have loved to stay longer and dream of returning one day. The first thing that is great about AIC is that it is not a hierarchical organization. The leaders are available, approachable and have a very hands-on approach. And as a volunteer, you are very quickly entrusted to fulfill duties that directly affect everyday life in the AIC programs. Whether it is teaching, being a mentor, interfacing with the local community, or...

Volunteering with the Ashraya Initiative for Children

Ashraya Initiative for Children, India
HM Harrington

Having taken a year out between school and university, I decided to volunteer in India, but as soon as I started to research possibilities I was overwhelmed by the amount and diversity of projects offering volunteering opportunities. I decided to look for something in Pune as I had visited the city once before, which is how I came across AIC, to which I was immediately attracted as they are a young charity, founded by college students with fresh ideas and real motivation to make a change. I got in touch with Eric Teasdale, the Human Resources Director, who gave me a great deal of really helpful information over the phone and by email. My application was accepted by the board of directors and the on-site team so I booked my...

Working With Better Family Foundation for 2 Years

February 10, 2012

Better Family Foundation, Cameroon
Stefanie Ginsburg

I recently returned from twenty-six months, serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Cameroon. I was posted in Fundong and partnered with a locally based NGO called, Better Family Foundation (BFF). While helping to build their capacity, I worked side by side with their Director, Mbeng Simon. Under his leadership, BFF has so much potential to improve the lives of families, through education, counseling and more! While helping Better Family Foundation carry out their mission, the NGO successfully supervised the planning and implementation of two local water projects, for the entire village of Ngwainkuma and the Meli High School. Both of these water projects became a reality and were witnessed by the phenomenal, Lois Pierris, creator of Shared World Visions. It is immediately evident...

FANTASTIC Fundong!

February 09, 2012

Better Family Foundation, Cameroon
Stephen Cormier

I have spent two months in Fundong, Cameroon with Better Family Foundation and my experience has been fantastic! Every single aspect of my volunteer experience was wonderful throughout my experience. I am incredibly lucky to have found myself in Fundong with Better Family Foundation (BFF) for a myriad of reasons—from my work to my support system around me. Overall, it was stellar. Better Family Foundation Members: My experience with working with the executive board members of BFF has been terrific. They are a motivated group of volunteers who seek to improve any facet of life in their community in any way they possibly can—no matter how big or small they want to take the time to design and implement interventions. BFF is very fortunate to have such an energetic and sage...

Wonderful Experience

January 12, 2012

Nayi Dishyein , India
Jessica McGehee

My friend and I spent two weeks working for a school in the Himalayas supported by this NGO and I have only positive things to say. The school was pioneered and led by an incredibly intelligent and compassionate woman named Pooja, who welcomed us with open arms and gave us plenty of enjoyable work. If you are looking for an efficient and effective charity organization to volunteer with in a gorgeous location, this is it.

Town School

January 12, 2012

Nayi Dishyein , India
Alex Landt

My name is Alex Landt. I’ve just returned to the USA after over a year in India and Nepal. I spent about 4 months during my travels volunteering. I met Pooja Dwivedi and Town School through another volunteer site, Workaway. I arrived in the first week of February 2011 and stayed for a month. I was her first volunteer. I returned for a two-day visit in the first week of December to say goodbye to Pooja and everyone who I connected with during my time at Town School. I have seen a few NGO’s and I’ve learned that many do not live up to their words. Town School does. It is a project that has been started by a local for the locals. Pooja is totally devoted to her work and...

Volunteering with Nayi Dishyein

January 07, 2012

Nayi Dishyein , India
Pauline Moriarty

I was a volunteer with Nayi Dishyein for 6 weeks until the school closed for the winter on 17th December. I am returning when it reopens to continue this work. Town School is a small rural school in Satyon, (not to be found on any map!), Garhwal Valley in the Himalayan foothills. The head teacher is Pooja Dwivedi an incredibly dynamic & inspirational person dedicated to providing excellent education to children from poor families. I loved my time there; the children are hard-working, fun to be with & so keen to learn. The landscape is stunning. Pooja & her family are excellent hosts & so easy to be with! I strongly recommend this situation.. Pauline Moriarty (retired teacher UK)...

My wife and I spent one month volunteering at Town School in Satyon. It was a wonderful experience and we had loads of fun with the kids. Pooja and Manish were the best hosts we have ever had. They provided everything we could possibly need and treated us like we were family.

Volunteer work in Cameroon/Esu

April 29, 2012

Omprakash, United States
Turóczi Ildikó

I spent two months in Nord-West Cameroon, in a fondom called Esu. It is not easy to be a volunteer MD in a region like this, but you can feel useful, you have the opportunity to be free in your work relying exclusively on your knowledge and experience. Once you start feeling the beauty of this work, you can be sure that you will never forget it in your life.More than 30,000 peoples are living here, populating the mountains around the ancient land of Esu. They are predominantly Christians and Muslims, with others keeping their belief in the ancestors spirits. They live in small houses built from mud and covered by grass. The Fulanis, coming from Nigeria, and the original peoples of Esu live in peace together. They are tolerant...
