A devastating fire in May 2012 wiped out Omprakash Partner Haiti Communitere’s workshop and a massive amount of their supplies. In the face of this disaster, this week’s featured Partner, Haiti Communitere, is focused on rebuilding and improving their impressive infrastructure of community development and sustainability projects.
Located in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti Communitere operates as the center of a wheel with many spokes in their surrounding communities. HC supports projects like a Community Resource Center and a street clean-up initiative called Unbuntu Blocks, among many others. The shared overhead of these projects allows financial streamlining and a unique cohesion between the projects.
While technically HC is classified as a disaster relief organization, the group prides themselves on their distinctly different approach to disaster. There is a notable lack of huge demolition and building projects, and a much greater emphasis placed on sustainability and grassroots disaster prevention.
It’s time to dust off those high school French skills and put them to good use with a volunteer stay at Haiti Communitere! Their dynamic project portfolio allows ample room for volunteer creativity and fulfillment and HC encourages empowerment of the individual through knowledge and awareness of their environment. You could even start your own project!
